Our Satellite Club welcomed new and visiting Rotarians, celebrated a huge Summer Sizzle and backpack drive, confirmed Leila as our incoming Chair Elect, and dug into membership growth and our next community work project. Up next: the Stone Soup food packaging event on August 30 and our next mixer on September 17.

Turnout

Great crowd this week — about 28 attendees total, split roughly 50-50 between lunch club and satellite club members, over an awesome meal at La Pizca.

Welcoming Guests

We welcomed Marissa Ritter, soon to be our newest satellite member and a local realtor. We were also joined by Jane, a visiting Rotarian from the Cambria club, and Steve, a past Rotarian visiting us again.

Happy Bucks

Happy bucks flowed freely this week — $25 to celebrate the huge volunteer turnout at last Saturday’s Summer Sizzle silent auction, another $25 in appreciation for how many hands showed up to help across the whole event (including RYLA/Interact students), and $50 recognizing both the Summer Sizzle drive work and how much the satellite club has grown.

Announcements

Backpack Drive: Michelle and Douglas ran a backpack drive through the YMCA and delivered roughly 90–97 backpacks to kids before the start of school — our club was the biggest contributor.
Summer Sizzle: By all accounts one of the best in years — fast setup, relaxed crowd, strong new-member turnout, and a total raised of over $105,000, with expenses running lower than last year, so net profit is expected to be up.
Food Packaging Event — Sun, Aug 30, Stone Soup Festival (Ramona Garden Park): We’ll package 10,000 shelf-stable meals in a tight window (setup ~10:30–11, event 12:00–1:20), split between our local little food pantries and the SLO Food Bank. We’ve already raised about $5,000 against ~$2,700 in expenses, with more fundraising underway to fund next year’s goal of 20,000 meals. Volunteers are needed to help spread the word on social media and keep the online giving campaign moving.

Ashlea nominated Leila for Chair Elect, Shannon seconded, and the club confirmed her unanimously with no objections. Congratulations, Leila!

Membership Rotary Moment

Ashley shared a piece on membership (it’s Rotary’s membership month), tying individual member contributions to the club’s collective impact — scholarships, food security, and grants that wouldn’t be possible without a strong, growing membership. That kicked off a group discussion on tactics: hosting low-stakes “info meetings” as an easier entry point than asking someone to commit right away, building shared digital/print marketing collateral (a marketing subcommittee has already met), and using social media to tell the “why Rotary” story alongside event promotion rather than just posting event flyers.

The conversation turned to how well members can explain “what is Rotary” on the spot — and right on cue, past Rotarian and friend of Rotary Doug MacMillan popped up from the crowd to deliver an impromptu Rotary elevator speech, tracing the club’s roots back to its founding in early-1900s Chicago. A fun, memorable moment for the room.

Work Project Discussion

The quarterly work-project committee (Kiran, Michael, and Hans) hasn’t formally met yet — Summer Sizzle prep took priority — but the goal is to land on a project by September. Two ideas on the table from the district: a pollinator garden (low cost, ties into a club sustainability goal) and a Peace Pole (~$300–400, a pole inscribed with “peace” in multiple languages for a public space).

Seth and Becca were recognized as this month’s spotlights, with Becca sharing a bit about her background (grew up in the LA area) and current work.
