Speaker: Past President Linda Osty presided over this weeks meeting in the absence of President Jack Hardy.
This weeks guest speaker was Robin Purcelli, Wine Director at Lido Restaurant at Dolphin Bay. Robin is also a wine maker and together with partner Amanda Hill they produce a single vineyard Grenache under their own label. She provided tastings of her wine which were well received. Some of the information Robin shared with the club addressed the differences between organic wines and natural wines and wine bio-dynamics.
Petite Syrah's are quite popular along the central coast right now as people seem to be gravitating toward the heavier, more full bodied wines lately, although habits and trends of different wines can vary greatly seasonally. Club members interested in learning more about our central coasts wines were reminded that each Tuesdays evening at 5 Lido has a happy hour where different wines are featured for tastings and food pairings.
Cale Kunkle was our Rotarian of the Week. Cale was grew up in a suburb of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where he and his mom took over his grandfathers landscaping business. This experience taught Cale valuable business skills starting at a very young age. After high school Cale enrolled in culinary school, moved to California and worked at various high end restaurants including the LA Country Club. He abandoned the food service industry and enrolled at Cal Poly, interned with Merrill Lynch and went on to earn his Eco-Finance degree. Upon graduating he went to work full time at Merrill Lynch. He was married in November of 2018 and he and wife Sarah bought a house in May of last year.
Announcements: Paul Holden let the club know that this Saturday we will do a highway clean up project from 9 to 11 am. Linda and Ken Osty, along with Margie and Eddie Saleme and Scott Astrosky are signed up to join Paul for the clean up project. All club members are invited to join in if they are available. They will meet for breakfast at Coco's prior to the highway cleanup.
Jim Lewis reminded members that next weeks meeting will be a vocational visit at the new Vespera Hotel in Pismo.
Recognitions: Fine master Mark Olsen recognized Connie O'Henley and Jennie Dierks for $25 each, for moving tables. Karen Zappia and Steve Burnside were fined $20 each for interrupting the fine master and Steve graciously offered to pay Karen's fine. Daryl Buck was recognized for becoming a board member of the Pismo Beach Chamber of Commerce with a $50 fine and Dick Dannells was recognized for his birthday for $30, but he has the fine free badge so the fine is now assessed to Jack?, Linda? or Mark?
