Guest Speaker Tatiana Burdiak - An introduction to Ukranian Culture
Word won't do justice to Tatiana's Burdiak's presentation. She started by playing the Ukranian National Anthem on the Bandura, a rare, 65-string instrument. (Makes a guitar look simple.)
Tatiana followed with a discussion of her work at Steppe. Steppe's mission is to "provide joy and healing by sharing Ukranian culture in Santa Cruz, California and beyond through a unique immersive folk dance and foodways experience." To date, Steppe has raised over $29,000 by partnering with community members through virtual, in-person Ukranian Folk Dance lessons and performances, by organizing large community fundraisers, and from merchandise sales. The funds are directed to Ukraine.
And then she invited members to join her in a Ukranian Dance performance. Brave dancers Rod Caborn, Patrice Keet, Eileen Beaudry, Ari Symons, Brent Dunton, Mary Alsip, and Peggy Pollard are quick learners! See the performance for yourself in this week's video recording.

Upcoming community service events for March 4 Beach Flats Nuevo Vista workday and March 25 Homeless Garden Project Farm workday are both FULL with enough volunteers.
March is also Women Build Month at Habitat for Humanity. Although there is no Rotary specific build day, we encourage members to sign up individually or with friends for this special month's build.
Stay tuned for more opportunities to support Ukraine, Second Harvest, Housing Matters and Red Cross, all in the works, some with our local Interact club members!
Bike Ride Beneficiary Applications
The Club is accepting beneficiary applications for the 2023 ride. The application can be found at www.sunriserotaryride.org.

We're looking for non-profits whose primary mission is to serve youth and youth-related causes in Santa Cruz County.
We welcome asks up to $50,000.

Area 7 Charitable Giving Workshop
Rotary District 5170 has put together a workshop on charitable giving to help us and our family and friends optimize our charitable giving strategies. This is an exclusive event for our Area 7 clubs here in Santa Cruz County. There is a powerhouse lineup of presentations by knowledgeable professionals on various topics, including Emily Buchbinder’s presentation on lifetime giving.
Thank you Lisa Krigsman for suggesting Homeland Elegies by Ayad Akhtar. Lisa says it "is a beautiful blend of fact and fiction that shares an American perspective I think few of us have. I would also say that this is a read best listened to. So much to unpack in this novel!"

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Santa Cruz County (BBBSSC) annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser is April 22 and 23. BBBSSC has created a Sunrise registration page and reserved a time for us from 11:45am to 1:00pm on Saturday, April 22. Click the link to sign up as an individual or a team. If spots fill up, more can be added. BBBSSC requests that each bowler donate or raise at least $100 and that each team raise at least $500. Please contact Debra Feldstein with any questions.
Generators for Ukraine. We raised $7,360 from 24 members to purchase 13 generators for Ukraine.
RYLA 2023 June 24-29 we have secured 6 camper spots. Registration is mid-March. Club members are invited to nominate someone they know. To learn more, contact Dave Mello.
