David Hamil is president of the Foundation for the District 5000 and a member of the Waikiki Rotary Club. He wanted to thank us for the support that we have provided and to announce that they have already raised about $1.8M. "Lahaina will come back." Read more below.

Delta Student of the Month: Delta continues to introduce us to some incredible young people and Greyson Scott is no exception. He is flanked here by Principal Jen Gebbie Ra'anan, Social Studies teacher Patrick Saporito, and our very own Santa Cruz Hero, Mary Gaukel-Forster. Congratulations Greyson!

We were joined by Sally Christine Rodgers, founder and lead organizer for Trash Talkers and Sally came to talk trash. The group has engaged with municipalities including Watsonville, Scotts Valley, and Capitola, has the support of politicians including Jimmy Panetta, Zoe Lofgren, and Robert Rivas, and departments and associations including Cal Trans, CA Dept. of Fish and Wildlife, Community Foundation of Santa Cruz, and many others. Sally discussed the many needs across the county, the real costs of illegal dumping, ways to contribute and participate in clean-ups, and shared a greater understanding of the tools and resources available to dispose of items and trash without abandoning them by the side of the road. Their mission is clear and compelling.
We received a message from Eileen Beaudry sharing that while attending a club meeting in Amsterdam she also met another visiting Rotarian from Zagreb Croatia and they all exchanged flags. And the icing on the cake is that she was able to connect with Patrice and Bob Keet who were in the Netherlands at the same time. Small world!
Sunrise Rotarians and Friends Support Lahaina
As you know, immediately after news of the horrific wild fire that swept through and devastated Lahaina in early August, our Club, led by President Penni and the Sunrise Board, sprang into action and pledged to raise $5,000 from members and friends to be matched by $5,000 from Club reserves to support the relief effort.
Within a week of the disaster, we made contact with Maui Rotarian Joanne Laird (formerly of Cupertino) and learned that 18 of the 70 Rotarians of Lahaina’s 3 Rotary clubs lost their homes. All 3 clubs lost all of their Rotary supplies. The local Rotarians, resilient and hopeful, had already begun supporting the search, rescue, clean-up and rebuilding efforts with boots on the ground and hands in the ashes. We learned through Joanne that what these impacted Rotarians wanted most urgently were those few things that would identify them as Rotarians and restore a small sense of place and purpose. They requested 50 “Rotarians at Work” vests, 70 Rotarian hats and 100 reusable name badges.
Wasting no time we struck a deal with the preeminent Rotary paraphernalia supplier, Russell Hampton, to purchase the requested items and have them express shipped to Hawaii at a reduced cost. See the photos below showing the items in use in Lahaina.
Nearly 25 of our club members and friends have been extraordinarily generous raising nearly $3,700 so far. Along with the $5,000 club match, we are within “inches” of hitting our $10k goal.
