Last Week . . .
This past week we had the pleasure of welcoming Hung Wei, District Governor for D5170.
As DG Hung Wei introduced brought everyone up to speed on what comprises the district, she posed the following question and answer, "So what does the district governor do? I'm going to tell you, nothing." Contributions to support victims of the disaster in Maui was discussed with DG Hung Wei during her visit. The Club is setting aside funds to support and will dovetail activity with the district and Rotary in Maui. This will be addressed at the next board meeting, stay tuned for how best to support and contribute.
Your Help is Needed - Now
Darlene de la Cerna who was President of the Rotary Club of Santa Cruz Sunrise 2011-2012 and is currently Rotary District 5170 Youth Exchange Director needs our help. Darlene continues her blood cancer battle and is in her 4th round of chemotherapy, having spent more nights in the hospital this year than in her own home.
When the chemotherapy has been completed, Darlene will need a matching Peripheral Blood Cell (PBSC) donor for the next stage of this life saving process. Donors must be age 18 to 40 and after initial paperwork screening, potential donors will be tested for various blood factors to determine if they qualify as a donor. The ultimate donor will commit to a process consisting of about a 20-30 hours over a period of weeks. To begin the process, simply join the “Be My Match” registry to be screened for eligibility via some paperwork, then a mouth swab or blood draw. The link to Be The Match is found at the end of this email.
If selected as the donor, the process normally involves removing a donor’s blood through one arm, passing it through a machine that separate the cells needed for transplants and returning the blood to the donor through the other arm.The entire process is completely voluntary, and a potential donor can withdraw from the process at any time.
As Rotarians we are comfortable with doing good works to help other people locally and around the world. But seldom do we have the opportunity to literally give the gift of life to a fellow dedicated Rotarian. The likelihood that any particular person would be the perfect match is rather small. The screening process is very simple. So we need to maximize the pool of potential donors by getting the word to to all Rotarians, their families and their social contacts.

Here is what’s happening with the Community Service Committee:
- The Downtown Club asks that those who can, please join their club members by dropping in on Hope’s Closet on Thursdays at 11 am (2555-2557 Soquel Dr, Santa Cruz, CA 95065) to bundle up clothing for children in need. I will put this in the next week’s Reveille.
- We have a number of new community service opportunities scheduled between now and end of the year! Sign up here!
- We will make a club charities and grants application for $500 for bikes in the Beach Flats Nueva Vista Center kids programs.
