The Sunrise Rotary Club crossed TWO finish lines on Saturday, September 29th at the 2018 Jon and Ken's Most Excellent Adventure Bike Ride ... one for the end of the bike ride and one for their fundraising goal! Over 60 riders arrived for a finish line party at Lighthouse Bank, complete with pizza, prizes, and some beverages after their 200 mile, 3-day quest along Highway 1. Despite the fatigue, sore muscles, and sunburn, there were smiles to be had everywhere!
The Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotarians are on target to raise over $100,000.00 in their fundraising efforts for Leo's Haven, Santa Cruz County's first inclusive playground for children of all abilities. LEO’s Haven at Chanticleer Park will be a playground uniquely designed to provide all children access to the benefits of play while teaching the vital lessons of compassion, awareness, and acceptance. A place where all children can belong. This year's ride was the culmination of a two year fundraising effort to support building the playground, which breaks ground on Saturday, October 13th at 10 am at Chanticleer Park.
The bike ride began in 1998 as a "fun and crazy idea" by Jon Sisk and Ken Whiting. They rode from Santa Cruz to San Luis Obispo. a picture of that first ride is below. Bruce McPherson, then California Secretary of State, is in the photo. The riders found Bruce having a constituency meeting while on their ride and invited him to be in the picture. Bruce then became part of the event for many years after that.
Next years' ride is already scheduled. The 22nd annual adventure is September 26th, 27th, and 28th. Save the Dates! You can reserve your spot with a discounted early bird entry by October 16th! Email santacruz88@gmail.com for more information.
