Sunrise Named Outstanding Volunteer Organization

With a large contingent of proud Rotarians in the gallery, Council member Katherine Beiers read the following acknowledgment into the record:

"A group of 11 members of the Santa Cruz Sunrise Rotary club provided over 100 hours of physical effort to place sculptures on Pacific Ave. for SculpTOUR 2008.  Behind the scenes there were many other club members who provided time, material and money to make the installation of the sculptures possible.  The Rotary Club demonstrated exemplary ability to work with the City and other entities to complete the project on time.  The club's commitment to service, civic pride and of course, love of outdoor sculpture exhibits is what motivates this wonderful club and has lead them to pledge continued support of the SculpTOUR program for a minimum of the next five years.  This is an amazing group of outstanding volunteers."

A number of other individuals and organizations were also honored for their outstanding volunteer contributions to the community.  The reception preceding the council meeting and the awards ceremony were sponsored by the CitySERVE Volunteer Program (a program of the Volunteer Centers of Santa Cruz County) and the City of Santa Cruz.

The ScupTOUR concept was the brainchild of Mike Bethke nearly 2 years ago.   He assembled a team with representation from the city, Rotary and other private sector groups and worked tirelessly to bring the remarkable display of local sculptors pieces to Pacific Avenue.   It's a win-win-win for the artists, city and all that stroll Pacific.
