Damon McGuire is a Registered Addiction Specialist.   He runs Intervention Works! a consultancy through which he leads family and executive interventions.

Damon presented to us the role of intervention in helping to jolt the addict out of the grips of their addiction and into treatment and ultimately health.  Through his personal experience and the experiences of others he's worked with over the past 18 years Damon paints a picture of addiction as a deeply self-destructive and patently unpleasurable state of being.

Typically, it takes a crises, often involving dire consequences, to force the addict to recognize their problem and to seek help.   Intervention is a process by which concerned friends and family create a "controlled" crises to hopefully reach a positive result.

To quote McGuire,

Families feel helpless as they watch a loved one ruin their life and adversely affect the lives of everyone around them. It will not get better- it will only get worse without treatment. There is direct action you can take, EVEN IF THEY HAVE REFUSED HELP IN THE PAST. Intervention is a loving and life changing act for all participants. The goal is two fold- to get the person into treatment and to help the family members and friends to set healthy boundaries for future interactions.
