RCL McCaskey High School Mentoring Program Graduation Ceremony
The Rotary Club of Lancaster will host a graduation ceremony for the Rotary-McCaskey Mentoring Program on May 10th, 2023, at The Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Rd, Lancaster, PA 17601. McCaskey Seniors who completed the Mentor Program will receive certificates of graduation at the Ceremony to signify their successful completion of this multi-year extracurricular program.
The Rotary-McCaskey Mentoring Program is a flagship community initiative for the Rotary Club of Lancaster. The Program connects Junior and Senior students at McCaskey High School with caring adults – businesspersons, retired executives, non-profit and healthcare executives, among others – who visit them at the school to participate in monthly career-building activities and life-advice discussions. The program aims to build mutually respectful relationships between mentors and students where the students will gain exposure to successful role-models, leadership perspectives and life lessons which, in turn, will help ensure that they make wise decisions, graduate from McCaskey, become gainfully employed with life-sustaining wages and grow to be future leaders and role models in their community. Approximately 26 students and 14 mentors participate in the Rotary-McCaskey Mentoring Program each year.
90% of the students within the School District of Lancaster live in poverty. “Many of the students deal with so many challenges in and outside of school,” says Alicia Moranz, former co-chair of the Rotary Club of Lancaster’s Mentoring Committee. “These mentoring relationships show the students that someone truly cares whether they show up and are successful in school.” Rich Wolman, chair of the Committee, added “Oftentimes the mentors get as much out of these relationships as the students.” “Mentoring has been linked with positive outcomes,” says Wolman, “Students who have successful role models graduate at a rate exceeding the school district averages and have deeper connections to their school and community.”
We will also be conferring our annual Rotary-McCaskey Mentor Program Thaddeus Stevens Scholarship Award on the selected McCaskey senior at the Graduation Ceremony. Several years ago, an anonymous donor honored our Mentor Program by establishing a permanent endowment fund with the Thaddeus Stevens Foundation. The intent of the endowment fund is to award a scholarship for tuition assistance at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology for a graduate of our Program. The scholarship provides funding for the selected student for both years of the two-year Thaddeus Stevens college program. Since the endowment is a permanent fund, it will be available in perpetuity for the mutual benefit of both our Mentor Program students who will be awarded the scholarship in the future and Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. “The scholarship is a recognition of the dedication and efforts of all of the mentors in our Mentor Program,” says Moranz.

After a passionate introduction of our speaker by Christine Sable, Lancaster Conservancy Past President Phil Wenger started the program with an overview of the Lancaster Conservancy. It owns over 10,000 acres of Natural Land which they will protect forever. It has 50 nature preserves and 71 conservation easements. It oversees 49 miles of trails and over 38 miles of streams. It has 166 acres of wetlands.
It is acting now to protect forever the few remaining natural lands that protect our streams, clean our air, and provide us special places to visit. It will protect wetlands and forests that remove carbon dioxide from the air, reduce the impact of flooding, and slow the pace of climate change. The Lancaster Conservancy's goals are to protect forests and streams, restore trails that provide outdoor experiences and educate the public at their nature centers.
Lancaster Conservancy President and CEO Fritz Schroeder described how after the land is acquired, it is protected. It is building visitor infrastructure. One problem is that some of the natural areas are being over appreciated and need more protection. It is managing wetlands so they prevent floods and stream pollution. The Lancaster Conservancy's goal is to make Climbers Run Nature Center fully accessible. All of these projects involve a strong team of volunteers. It is training youth leaders and teachers to be instructors for their groups. The 2023 Lancaster Conservancy's Water week is June 2-10. Over 20 organizations are sponsors this year. Many clubs and organization are partnering and conducting special events.
The club heartedly approved of Christine Sable's invitation to the Lancaster Conservancy to provide a program. As is the custom, President Russ presented a book for Fritz and Phil to sign It will be donated to the SDL.
At the conclusion of the program, Rob Gallagher presented the Lancaster Conservancy a Presidential grant since Brad Reynolds chose the Lancaster Conservancy as his charity.

Rotary Rendezvous meets May 10!
Rotary Rendezvous has become a highlight of RCL business and social gatherings, and a fun event for current and potential new members. Anyone who is interested in joining our committee, looking for fellowship, or simply a night out, please join us for Rotary Rendezvous on Wednesday, May 10, at Southern Market in Lancaster. Parking is available at the Steinman garage or folks can find side street parking.
Rotary Rendezvous meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.
Arrive anytime between 5-5:30pm for drinks and fellowship.

Give Prepaid Lunch Tickets to Prospective New Members
This is a great way to invite new members! Crystal has "prepaid" lunch tickets that you can purchase and give to prospective new members when you invite them to a meeting. This way you don't have to worry about paying for their meal when they come or, for that matter, even being present when they come. Lunches are $18.
By now, Saturday, June 24 should be on your must-do list for this summer. Our 2023 Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K is shaping up to be a huge event, with record attendance.
Jamie Alton announced that Oaktree Outdoor Advertising is donating 9 digital billboards for the month before the Festival. The billboards will rotate different attractions of WW5K: the car show, fly-in, 5K race, vendors and live music, and the WWII warbirds.
WW5K is already featured in Cruise News magazine, the major source of news and car show listings for our region. We will also have a full-page ad as well as high-profile listings in their May-June issue.
Jamie also announced that sponsorships have reach $17,000 on our way to a goal of $51,000.
Chip Kirchner previously announced that United Way has matched our increased commitment of $30,000 to the Summer Youth Partnership. Part of this commitment is to create a video of the Summer Youth Experience and will include video from the Wheels & Wings festival. Funded agencies are being invited to ask their staff and youth who benefit from their services to walk the grounds to thank supporters. WW5K will feature WWII warbirds (vintage aircraft) from the Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. There will be rides available on some of the warbirds. To register for a ride, go to capitalwingwarbirdrides.org.
It’s not too early to reserve Saturday, June 24 for a day of Rotary volunteer service – and family fun!
There will be numerous opportunities for all RCL members to volunteer – including before the event. The subcommittee needs volunteers very soon to distribute registration flyers to participants at selected car shows throughout Lancaster County in May and June. If you like going to car shows, or simply have some time to take a Saturday afternoon ride this spring, please consider volunteering to help spread the word about our own WW5K.
