“It’s About Leather” - The Sustainable Composites LLC Story
Leather producers have had to deal with leather waste. Up to 75% of traditional leather is unused and is often disposed of by being sent to landfill or incineration. Sustainable Composites LLC has developed a patented, totally unique, technically advanced material made from leather waste which changes the environmental landscape for leather products. It is a new application of fiber technology, using only leather fiber derived from waste leather, to produce a responsible product with the attributes only previously available with traditional leather.
While some organizations have developed useful products made from leather waste, they are usually low-value products that do not capture the aesthetics and attributes of leather which make it such a desirable material. After 5 years and millions of dollars invested in R&D, SCL has developed unique and patented technology to deliver these qualities.
Following a successful career with Armstrong World Industries in various technical and executive positions, Frank Fox partnered with Tom Tymon, a fellow Armstrong colleague, to create and build Lancaster based Sustainable Composites LLC. Frank Fox will present the company’s story and take questions at our August 11 meeting.

President Rob presented each member of the Wheels & Wings Committee a "Sally," the Sally Bures Service Above Self - Pass It Forward Award. Each recipient is expected to pass it on within 2 weeks to another Rotarian for Service Above Self.
Wheels and Wing Wrapup
The Wheels & Wings committee has preliminary results for a very successful event. The 5K had 116 register, and 109 participate. Since 107 registered online, there was very little onsite registration. Brethren Village hosted the 5K and looks forward to doing it again next year. The residents enjoyed it as spectator event. A National Guard Huey Helicopter was on display. A passenger helicopter went up for about 30 rides. The bottom line is that the event made $39,000 for the Summer Youth Experience, which supports 1,000 city youth between the ages of 5 and 17 through activities that teach leadership skills and prevent the “summer slide” for students. The Summer Youth Experience is funded in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster. Congratulation to the Wheels & Wings Committee and all who helped maKe this event a huge success. The previous event in 2019 netted $19,000, so this was a giant step forward.
Rotary Rendezvous on August 11
Rotary Rendezvous will be meeting on Wednesday, August 11th at Lucky Dog Cafe (off Columbia Ave.) between 5-5:30pm for drinks. Dinner will follow. All are welcome to join.
