The Pandemic has certainly been an adjustment for all of us. For several years, we have used Zoom to attend the meetings and it has helped us "see one another". Thankfully, our weekly in -person member attendance has increased. In order for the Rotary Club of Lancaster to get back to some sort of normalcy, the Board has decided on "No Zoom in June". We would like to have in-person meetings only and see all of you, our members, back and seated at the tables at the Farm & Home Center. We most certainly will enjoy the conversations with one another (in-person) as we had prior to the Pandemic.

A Discussion With Chief Bey
John T. Bey serves as the Chief of Police for the Lancaster City Bureau of Police. He brings with him a passion for law enforcement, community engagement, and public service. Prior to his appointment, Chief Bey retired from the Pennsylvania Air National Guard after 35 years of service. His last assignment was as the Superintendent, Comptroller's Office 193rd Special Operations Wing, Harrisburg Pa. He also served as the Chief of Police Middletown Borough Police Department, and is a retired Captain after a 25+ year career with the Pennsylvania State Police. He last served as the Director of Training, Bureau of Training and Education with the Pennsylvania State Police. Chief Bey is a graduate of Elizabethtown College with a Bachelors in Corporate Communications, Associates in Finance from The Community College of the Air Force and is a graduate of the 240th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia. Chief Bey is also the former president of the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of NOBLE (National Organization of Black Law Executives).
Would you like to volunteer with the Rotary Citizenship Program? If so, please follow the steps outlined below to officially register.
The Rotary Citizenship Program helps adult English learners in IU13’s Citizenship classes practice for their upcoming U.S. Citizenship test. As a volunteer, you will join a Citizenship class remotely via Zoom and be placed in a breakout room for one hour with a student and help prepare them for their Citizenship test.
Volunteer opportunities are available each Wednesday morning and Wednesday evening from May 25th to June 15th, 2022
Step 1
Send an email to Jane Myers at jane@literacysuccess.org indicating that you are interested in becoming a volunteer with the Rotary Citizenship Program. Be sure to include your full name and phone along with dates and times you are available for a 10-minute phone paperwork session with her; Jane will respond to confirm your meeting time. During the phone call, she will collect the information needed to officially register you as a volunteer. She will conduct the required criminal background check for you free of charge.
Step 2
Once you have made initial contact with Jane Myers, sign up for the dates/times you are available on our Volunteer Sign-Up Google Sheet. If you have trouble making your selection, please email josh_mcmanness@iu13.org for help. There are two tabs at the bottom of the volunteer sign-up sheet, one tab for morning and one for evening. Please sign up for as many dates/times as you are able. You can also sign-up as a “Back-Up” to be on-call in case another volunteer cannot take part in a session for which they registered.
You will need to watch the video, register as a volunteer, and sign up as a volunteer by May 23rd.
Step 4
After you have completed the volunteer registration process with Jane Myers and have registered for the time slots you are available, you are ready to start volunteering in this program. Click on the Zoom links below for the morning and evening classes at the start time. Please be punctual. Keep track of the hours you spend volunteering because Jane Myers will contact you at the end of each month to collect this information.

Wheels, Wings & 5K Committee Announces Date: June 25
The Wheels, Wings, & 5K Committee meetings will be on the 16th and 23rd. Signup sheets are available at meetings, or call Jamie. Volunteers are being solicited for all positions. Please join them to make our Club's signature community event and fundraiser a roaring success this year. Now they need volunteers to 1) collect items for grab bags and the raffle, 2)do marketing at car shows, 3) develop online registration for vendors and attendees, 4) develop the 4K, and 5) seek sponsorships.
Please join us for Rotary Rendezvous on Wednesday, May 25th between 5-5:30pm for drinks with dinner to follow. We hope to see you there! - Rendezvous Committee. Details will be announced
Gil Lyons announced that the Lancaster Rotary Regatta is coming back September 23 to 25. Several sail boats have been lined up. Motor boats are invited to visit. Details will become available. For more information contact Gil.

Urgent! Rotary Service: Power Packs Needs You!
Lancaster Rotarians have been volunteering for Power Packs for children in the School District of Lancaster (Washington Elementary and Reynolds Middle School) for years. The last couple of years we have been very short on volunteers.
COVID has changed the role of a volunteer and reduced time commitments.
In this environment, we are looking for volunteers to pick up boxes of food at the Power Packs warehouse and deliver to Washington and Reynolds on Wednesdays at 10:30AM. The whole pick up and delivery takes about an hour and you can definitely make the Rotary meeting afterwards. Mid-size or larger SUVs and vans would be ideal, but if we can assemble some two vehicle teams we can split the loads. There is a physical aspect to loading and unloading the boxes, but if needed we can get help from the warehouse and schools.
Volunteers do not have to commit to every week. The coordinator sends an email the month prior asking for availability of volunteer and creates a schedule accordingly.
Please consider serving in this worthwhile program.
Tom Gemmill is always looking for ideas to add to the list of potential programs. Thanks to those that have come up with ideas. He currently has a list of over twenty five ideas to work on. If you have any ideas, please contact Tom at tomgemmill.tg@gmail.com.
The programs the Lancaster Rotary Club has are truly phenomenal. Kudos to Tom for such great programs and for all of the effort he puts into tracking down and scheduling these speakers and getting their programs summaries, bios and introducers. Great job Tom! We appreciate it.
