"Jim MacMillan, Phila. Center for Gun Violence" - Zoom Mtg
What if changing the way journalists report on gun violence could prevent shootings and save lives?
Reporting on gun violence comes with exceptional challenges, responsibilities and opportunities. The Initiative for Better Gun Violence Reporting has been created to inform a set of best practices specifically intended for journalists covering community gun violence and to explore the hypothesis that changing the way this issue is presented can actually reduce violence. Now we are building a Center for Gun Violence Reporting at Community College of Philadelphia to raise a new voice and report on solutions to gun Violence from the community perspective. Looking ahead we will focus on newsroom engagement, collaborative research, implementation of what we learn, impact assessment and replication of what works.
Jim MacMillan is the founder and director of The Initiative for Better Gun Violence Reporting and is now developing the Center for Gun Violence Reporting at Community College of Philadelphia. Last year he was a Residential Fellow at the Reynolds Journalism Institute at the University of Missouri.
Previously, MacMillan was the Journalist in Residence at Swarthmore College, a Fellow with Philadelphia Social Innovations Lab at the University of Pennsylvania, a Practitioner in Residence at the Institute for Global Leadership at Tufts University, an Ochberg Fellow with the Dart Center for Journalism and Trauma at Columbia University, and the Knight Fellow in Medicine/Health Sciences Journalism with the Knight-Wallace Fellows at the University of Michigan.
Previous faculty appointments include the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Swarthmore College, New York University, and Temple University. He has created courses in Peace Journalism, Solutions Journalism, and Trauma Journalism.
During his prior photojournalism career, MacMillan spent 17 years at the Philadelphia Daily News and covered close to 2,000 shooting incidents. He also worked for The Associated Press in Boston and in Baghdad during the war in Iraq, after which his team was awarded The Pulitzer Prize.

Diversity & Inclusion Rotary Book Club
As we continue learning new ideas and hear new perspectives regarding today’s topics through our Diversity and Inclusion Committee, a suggested reading for an upcoming book club is Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man, by Emmanuel Acho. This is merely a suggestion and we hope that you might like to join in the conversation.
Howard Hanson has agreed to lead the Rotary Book Group. Howard P. Hanson is an Assistant Principal, J. P. McCaskey High School Campus. He has been a teacher and administrator for the SDL for 18 years. A 1982 graduate of Earlham College, he has been a Desegregation Consultant to the Massachusetts Department of Education and has worked on multicultural education and equity issues for years. He has been involved in equity and diversity work for the District and facilitated a similar book study for the District’s Equity Steering Committee. He has also presented to the Millersville University Social Justice Initiative on several occasions.
Howard has proposed the following dates for the discussion: 3/4, 3/18, 4/8, 4/22, and 5/6.
Time: 5:00-6:00 pm.

Jason Asbell and Pack 93 of Lititz are looking for a Cubmaster
Jason Asbell announced that Pack 93 of St. Peters in Lititz is looking for a person to take over as Cubmaster after the current Cubmaster moves up to Scouts with his son. The Cubmaster will work with the new person to make the transition smooth. The Cubmaster is responsible for the monthly Pack meeting which is the first Monday of each month from 7 to 8 PM in the cafeteria of Reidenbaugh Elementary School (Manheim Township). The Pack has a committee of which Jason is the Chair. The committee consists of Jason and a treasurer, den leaders, and parents that help out. Committees usually meet monthly. They are hoping to find a Rotarian who shares their commitment to service to youth and service to community. They have an excellent website at: http://cubscoutpack93.com/welcome-to-pack93/. Joys & Concerns
Joy from Bob McClenathan: My second grandchild was born this morning August 3 at 3:19am. Mom and baby are fine. Grandparents are super.
Concern from Jess May: Per latest CDC guidance, people in areas reporting “substantial” transmission rates, which includes Lancaster County, are urged to again wear masks indoors regardless of their vaccination status.
Joy from President Rob: After Rob ran over a screwdriver, he was able to make it to a shop to get the tire repaired.
Joy from Kathy Hainley: For the first time since the pandemic started, Kathy will fly to California to see her grandson. She is returning on August 14.
