Don’t miss this week's meeting to discover how one person’s trash becomes another person’s renewable energy. We’ll also hear more about the challenges posed by the pervasive lithium-ion battery, which has literally become an explosive environmental issue. It powers our mobile phones, laptops, everyday portable tools, and electric vehicles. It can also, under some circumstances, be a serious safety concern and a challenge for disposal or recycling.
Kelly Morris of Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority, LCSWMA, will cover these and other significant trash disposal and recycling issues. She will begin with an overview of LCSWMA, which manages the trash and recyclable materials from Lancaster County homes and businesses, as well as trash from Harrisburg and surrounding Dauphin County communities. Once the waste is delivered by private haulers, LCSWMA employs a multi-step approach to disposal and processing, called an Integrated System. This Integrated System not only saves significant landfill capacity, it also creates clean, renewable energy.
Kelly will explain about where trash and recycling go after being put on the curb. She will describe how most of Lancaster County waste gets turned into energy, and summarize the recycling and household hazardous waste data. She also plans to highlight community engagement and will encourage questions.
Kelly Morris is the LCSWMA Recycling Manager and the Lancaster County Recycling Coordinator. She has her undergraduate degree in Business Administration from Elizabethtown College and her graduate MBA in Sustainable Management from Anaheim University. When not talking trash, Kelly enjoys hugging trees and frolicking outdoors.

President Beth's clear and exciting vision for 2023-24 was well received in her inaugural message. She is focusing her four goals on issues that are important to our members and that differentiate and strengthen RCL in the community. They are framed around our mission, strategic plan, the Rotary Four Way Test, and the current focus of Rotary International to “Create Hope in the World.”
Her goals are summarized on the slides reproduced below. She said the goals will renew our focus on some priorities that have always resonated with RCL members. These include increased fundraising to support community service, aggressive membership growth and retention, and reviving RCL community and business relationships. She emphasized that engaging speaker programs and a focused process for “welcoming and belonging” are essential to renewed growth. President Beth concluded by saying that she, the new Executive Committee and Board welcome any feedback and input.

Rotary Rendezvous meets July 26!
Rotary Rendezvous has become a highlight of RCL business and social gatherings, and a fun event for current and potential new members. Anyone who is interested in joining our committee, looking for fellowship, or simply a night out, please join us for Rotary Rendezvous on Wednesday, July 26, at Southern Market in Lancaster. Parking is available at the Steinman garage or folks can find side street parking.
Rotary Rendezvous meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.
Arrive anytime between 5-5:30pm for drinks and fellowship.

Club goes cashless in August
Since our meals are now are included in our dues, there is only a need to pay for meals when we bring guests. Cash will be accepted in July, but in August only credit cards will be accepted.

Dues modification during Leave of Absence
The new dues structure remains in place. However, any member may request a 3-month leave of absence. Dues will be $122 for this three-month period.
