The Spanish American Civic Association, SACA Development Corporation and SACA Broadcasting have long been committed to the empowerment of the Latino community through a strenuous process of self-help and self-development and throughout that process, the betterment of the entire Lancaster community. Now more than ever, the Latino community needs to invest in itself and the general community is encouraged to invest in our efforts at community development.

Jose R. Lopez: Lopez, 54, was hired as president of SACA and SACA Development Corp. in 2020. He was born in Puerto Rico. The former bank executive and commercial real estate appraiser grew up in Lancaster city's southeast and is a 1989 graduate of West Chester University.

Stevens Greenland Cemetery Workday, Sat. May 1, 2021, at Noon.

 

We are asking volunteers to help on Saturday, May 1, 2021, beginning at 12:00 Noon, to assist with the clean-up at the Stevens Greenland Memorial Cemetery.   Address is  1000 S. Duke Street, Lancaster.  

 

Dave Ashworth approached the Board requesting volunteers to assist in restoring a cemetery where veterans from as far back as the Civil War have been laid to rest.  Once restored, there will be a Memorial Day Ceremony held on May 31, 2021, at 11:00 AM open to the public to honor these veterans.  The Board has unanimously agreed to purchase one or several benches to place in this cemetery from the Rotary Club of Lancaster.

 

The cemetery was opened in 1906 adjacent to the Bethel A.M.E. Church.  This cemetery is full of history, it has the largest number of African American Veterans in Lancaster County.  These are men who served in the Civil War, Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II and the Korean War.  Several Buffalo soldiers are buried at this site and one veteran that served in the Navy.  In addition to these veterans, there are also leaders and residents of the community whose names still blanket the City of Lancaster such as Polite, Wilson, Cooper, Stewart and so many, many more.  

 

Sadly, decades have taken their toll on this cemetery.  Several headstones need cleaning and restoration.  Some have been kicked over, broken and even vandalized to the degree of becoming illegible.  Individuals have used the cemetery as a dumping site for trash and other debris.  Tree stumps need to be removed, flags need to be replaced, lighting needs to be added to various areas. 

 

I am quite sure with Rotary Club of Lancaster volunteers, we can improve this cemetery to the point where it will be a beautiful site for visitors to reflect upon and honor those veterans who are buried there.   Please notify Kathy Hainley at rotarycluboflancaster@gmail.com if you would like to help with this important project.

Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K is back! 

1. Save the date and plan to volunteer on Saturday, July 24.  We will need volunteers from 6AM until 4 PM the day of the event.
