Hope Walks is the largest Christian provider of clubfoot care.
Scott Reichenbach is the president and co-founder of Hope Walks which addresses the need for treatment of clubfoot in South America and Aftica. Most people have never heard of clubfoot or know that it needlessly cripples tens of thousands of children every year. With simple treatment and support and encouragement for the family, Hope Walks frees kids from disability and transforms their lives physically and spiritually.
Clubfoot is a congenital deformity that affects nearly 1 in every 750 births worldwide. It is characterized by a foot that twists down and in, making walking difficult or impossible. It is a curable condition, and the treatment is inexpensive using the Ponseti method of serial casting, tenotomy, and bracing. The CURE Clubfoot program utilizes this approach around the world to ensure that children can live a lifetime without a disability as a result of clubfoot.
Hope Walks is the largest Christian provider of clubfoot care. It provides quality clubfoot treatment while empowering local healthcare workers and educating parents and caregivers. Hope Walks officially became an independent organization in 2019, but grew out of an existing clubfoot program that began in 2006. Since the program began, Hope Walks has enrolled more than 150,000 kids in clubfoot treatment.
For our June 7th "5th Wednesday Service Project" meeting, RCL will have a Brace-Painting Party to help kids with clubfoot. This is a fun and unique way to help a child with clubfoot – a very treatable birth defect. We will paint braces used in the treatment process and brighten the world of a child born with clubfoot. We’ll have fun while helping a child take his or her first steps on straight feet. Paint a brace and brighten the world of a child born with clubfoot.
Does a brace really need to be painted? No, it will work just fine all black or brown and boring. But as you can imagine, kids often complain about wearing these braces while they sleep. A fun-looking and colorful brace can help a child want to wear it. Our program manager in Zambia told us about one little boy who was in tears when he grew out of his painted brace and had to move up to the next size and Hope Walks didn’t have a painted brace for him. Painted braces encourage moms to return to the clinic when their child outgrows their current boots. A clubfoot mom or dad will have fewer struggles getting their child to wear a brace. This is more than just an art project. It is a device that is a vital part of the healing process.
Scott Reichenbach is a graduate of Messiah College, Scott worked as a nurse in Pediatric Intensive Care Units across the country before becoming involved in international health work in 2000 with Samaritan’s Purse. He pioneered the Post-Residency Program at Samaritan’s Purse and served as the Medical Response Coordinator for several of their international medical responses. In 2014, Scott joined CURE International to serve as operations director for CURE Clubfoot before creating and transitioning the program to Hope Walks. Scott and his wife Rachel have three children, Benjamin, Anna and Julia.
Also be sure to note our upcoming schedule of exciting programs in the “Speakers” column below – and plan to attend!
The May 17th meeting was primarily meetings of the Fundraising and Community Committees. Unfortunately, the attendance could have been better:
The Community Committee went over all of their events throughout the year. They expressed interest in creating an "Annual Report" with reports and pictures of fundraising events and service events including our 5th Wednesday projects.
Most of the action was in the Fundraising Committee. Jamie reported that over $26,800 had been raised from sponsorships. The committee is actively working to get the number up to $51,000 by June 1. Other details were being worked out.
On May 24, representatives of the Foundation Committee will be in the back of the meeting room to help you with information about your Rotary Foundation account. Do you want to know your status with the Foundation? Do you want to know how much you need to contribute to gain your next Paul Harris Fellow level? Do you want to know the last time you made a contribution or know how much you've given in total to the Foundation? Do you want to know how to begin to make a contribution either through the club or on-line? You can get answers to your questions at the Rotary Foundation information desk.

This is a great way to invite new members! Crystal has "prepaid" lunch tickets that you can purchase and give to prospective new members when you invite them to a meeting. This way you don't have to worry about paying for their meal when they come or, for that matter, even being present when they come. Lunches are $18.
Thanks to everyone who has committed to sponsoring or secured sponsors for WW5K 2023! Our sponsorship total has passed $26,800. Our goal is to reach $50,000 to fund our increased commitment to the Summer Youth Program. If your company's name or your name does not appear below, you can give online through the Club's website. Just select Wheels and Wings & 5K under Reason for Donation. As of May 20:

Saturday, June 24 should be on every members must-do list. Our 2023 Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K is shaping up to be a huge event, with record attendance. Be sure to attend the weekly meetings at 11:30 AM every Wednesday. Our WW5K is now less than five weeks away.
Oaktree Outdoor Advertising is donating 9 digital billboards for the month before the Festival. They have 8 different billboard designs to use:
As mentioned earlier in this issue, Jamie announced that sponsorships have reached $26,800 on our way to a goal of $50,000. We need to have all sponsorship commitments by June 1.
To recap our ongoing updates on this huge event: Chip Kirchner previously announced that United Way has matched our increased commitment of $30,000 to the Summer Youth Partnership. Part of this commitment is to create a video of the Summer Youth Experience and will include video from the Wheels & Wings festival. Funded agencies are being invited to ask their staff and youth who benefit from their services to walk the grounds to thank supporters. WW5K will feature WWII warbirds (vintage aircraft) from the Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. There will be rides available on some of the warbirds. To register for a ride, go to: capitalwingwarbirdrides.org.
It’s not too early to reserve Saturday, June 24 for a day of Rotary volunteer service – and family fun!
There will be numerous opportunities for all RCL members to volunteer – including before the event. Contact subcommittee co-chairs Amy Lewis or Jamie Dalton.
REMINDER: Share Your Program Ideas! We welcome interesting speakers, and engaging programs.
Our Club is always looking for ideas to add to the list of potential programs. If you have any ideas for programs, please contact Christine Sable (sableccim@gmail.com) or another member of the Meeting Planning Committee or any Board member, who will pass them along. Both live and virtual (Zoom) speakers are welcome.
The programs the Lancaster Rotary Club offers are important for our club and, with your help and participation, have often been truly phenomenal.
