For our belated 5th Wednesday Service Project, we will be painting braces used in clubfoot treatment How exciting to have Hope Walks with us again on June 7th, for our service project. As you learned at our meeting this week, we will be painting braces to make them more attractive and fun for the beautiful children who will be wearing them. No need to worry, artistic skills are not needed!
It would be fantastic to see some of your friends, family members and coworkers join on the day of service, to make the impact even greater!
Hope Walks was formed when CURE Club Foot changed its emphasis to only surgical remedies. Hope Walks, on the other hand, seeks to locate children with club foot soon after birth. This is a time when non-surgical methods can be used and children can have club foot corrected to a point where the child can walk normally by the time they are ready to learn to walk. The cost of treatment is about $500, much less than surgical treatments. These nonsurgical methods can be used throughout the world. The Ponseti method of treatment involves 6 weekly sessions of casting, 3 weeks for tendon release, and then bracing up until age 5. After they walk, bracing is done while sleeping as a retainer.

The 56th 4-H Strawberry Roundup and Auction continued an annual Club tradition. Started in 1956, the Lancaster Rotary Club sponsored the 4-H Strawberry Roundup. After the strawberries were judged, the various divisions were invited to our May 31st meeting where they were introduced to Rotary Members and their strawberries were auctioned off. The winning 4-H members receive the entire bid amount. The students took home a total of $2,950 from the auction.

After the auction, 4-H invited their partners in the imagine science program that introduces students to STEM subjects in a fun way to stimulate interest. Lancaster's is one of only 15 in the country.

Rotary Rendezvous meets June 7!
Rotary Rendezvous has become a highlight of RCL business and social gatherings, and a fun event for current and potential new members. Anyone who is interested in joining our committee, looking for fellowship, or simply a night out, please join us for Rotary Rendezvous on Wednesday, June 7, at Southern Market in Lancaster. Parking is available at the Steinman garage or folks can find side street parking.
Rotary Rendezvous meetings are on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.
Arrive anytime between 5-5:30pm for drinks and fellowship.

The Board of Directors will brief club on our budgets.
New budgets, will consolidate member dues and lunch costs for greater efficiency
At a time of national debate over deficit spending, our Board of Directors has unanimously approved a balanced budget that addresses concerns over the use of Foundation funds and provides an equitable solution to our weekly lunch expenses. The Board will soon distribute the new budget, but last week President Elect Beth provided a summary of key points and the logic behind them. The result is actually two budgets that tackle the major financial issues facing the Club.
One of those issues was untangling Club and Foundation financials and creating separate budgets. The Board has worked for more than a year to clean up accounts and correctly position income and expenses. Now, only the Club budget pays for RCL business and the Foundation funds our outreach – in Lancaster and internationally.
The most obvious budget change for members is that the dues now include the cost of lunch. This consolidated dues-luncheon assessment -- $278.75 quarterly -- is new to RCL, but not to Rotary. After several years of discussion, the Club is following the successful model of many other clubs by rolling together dues and food costs for a variety of reasons:
We are a service organization, and our budgets should more fully support our mission. However, our weekly meetings haven’t been self-supporting, or cost-neutral, for a long time.
Meeting expenses include the room and the catering. The catering is much improved now that Hess is back, but their cost is based on 50 attending and club members bussing their own tables. When fewer than 50 members attend, RCL covers the gap and loses money.
Our budgets will be cleaner because we can anticipate income and expenses.
We no longer need to collect and handle money at meetings.
There are savings for those of us who attend regularly. The new approach to consolidating dues and weekly luncheon costs can be surprisingly cost effective. Stay tuned for news about the upcoming budget meeting. In the meantime, you may reach out to Beth, Russ, Eric, or any Board member.

Saturday, June 24 should be on every member's must-do list. Our 2023 Wheels and Wings Festival & 5K is shaping up to be a huge event, with record attendance. Be sure to attend the weekly meetings at 11:30 AM every Wednesday. WW5K is now less than four weeks away.

As mentioned earlier in this issue, Jamie announced that sponsorships have reached $29,450 on our way to a goal of $50,000. We need to have all sponsorship commitments by June 1.
To recap our ongoing updates on this huge event: Chip Kirchner previously announced that United Way has matched our increased commitment of $30,000 to the Summer Youth Partnership. Part of this commitment is to create a video of the Summer Youth Experience and will include video from the Wheels & Wings festival. Funded agencies are being invited to ask their staff and youth who benefit from their services to walk the grounds to thank supporters. WW5K will feature WWII warbirds (vintage aircraft) from the Capital Wing of the Commemorative Air Force. There will be rides available on some of the warbirds. To register for a ride, go to: capitalwingwarbirdrides.org.
It’s not too early to reserve Saturday, June 24 for a day of Rotary volunteer service – and family fun!
There will be numerous opportunities for all RCL members to volunteer – including before the event. Contact subcommittee co-chairs Amy Lewis or Jamie Dalton. Volunteers are needed in the morning for the 4K as well as during the day for the main event.

Joy: Mike Smith was happy that his daughter Bella is graduating from Central York High School on May 26th and will be attending Bloomsburg University in the fall.
Privilege: It was a privilege for the members to hear Dave Foulk's account of being born with clubfoot and the impact the treatments had on his childhood. The story had a happy ending.
Concern: All Rotarians were sad to hear that Cyrstal Leininger is resigning as Executive Assistant on June 28. She started with us at a critical time and has served admirably. We will all miss her.
