Per latest CDC guidance, people in areas reporting “substantial” transmission rates, which includes Lancaster County, are urged to again wear masks indoors regardless of their vaccination status. Masks may be removed when enjoying a meal while seated at a table.

A conversation with the Chief
On June 21, 2021, Mayor Sorace appointed John T. Bey as the Chief of the Lancaster Police Bureau. Chief Bey had served as interim chief for seven months. He was sworn in as Lancaster’s police chief on August 2, 2021. Bey spoke of partnering with the community, accountability and transparency.
“Today, our partnership is committed to marry the need for public safety with the demands for justice,” he said.
Bey has an extensive background in law enforcement, including expertise in communications, community policing, effective recruitment of minorities and women, managing budgets and resource allocation, and education and training.
Bey previously served as the Chief of Police for the Middletown Borough Police Department from Oct. 2014 through May 2017.
Chief Bey spent 25 years with the Pennsylvania State Police, retiring as Captain, Director of Training Division. During his career he also served as Director of Heritage Affairs and Recruitment and Special Services, as well as Emergency Planning Liaison Officer to the PA Emergency Management Association. He has overseen patrol and investigative divisions.
Additionally, in November 2020 he retired as Chief Master Sergeant, Superintendent of Financial Services for the U.S. Air Force Reserves and PA Air National Guard managing a budget of more than $300 million.
The Lancaster City Bureau of Police is the largest Police Department in Lancaster County, with 139 sworn officers.
Wally Otto reported that 2021 will see the return of the Lancaster Rotary Crab Fest. It is scheduled for 5:00 PM on October 7, 2021. It be held at a local venue. Details will be announced as they become available.
