Diversity & Inclusion Rotary Book Club
According to our group leader, Howard Hanson, if you missed the first session or would like to join the group, it is not too late.
The suggested reading for the book club is Uncomfortable Conversations With a Black Man, by Emmanuel Acho. This is merely a suggestion and we hope that you might like to join in the conversation.
For those joining new or coming back from the first session, our charge for next week is to read Part I. Once we get to page 67, Howard would like us to think about the discordant notes in our reading. What do we question or disagree with? What about our lived experience runs counter to what Emmanuel puts on the table for our consumption?
Howard P. Hanson is an Assistant Principal, J. P. McCaskey High School Campus. He has been a teacher and administrator for the SDL for 18 years. A 1982 graduate of Earlham College, he has been a Desegregation Consultant to the Massachusetts Department of Education and has worked on multicultural education and equity issues for years. He has been involved in equity and diversity work for the District and facilitated a similar book study for the District’s Equity Steering Committee. He has also presented to the Millersville University Social Justice Initiative on several occasions.
Howard has scheduled the following dates for the discussion: 3/18, 4/8, 4/22, and 5/6.
Time: 5:00-6:00 pm.

Last November about 18 members of our Rotary Club participated in an Equity Circle hosted by Work Wisdom. Feedback from participants was positive. We also know that the date and timeframe did not work for everyone who would have liked to have this opportunity.
We are pleased to again be able to offer this 90-minute virtual experience for any member of our Club to be held on March 25, 2021 at 7:30am. Large group and breakout sessions will provide for ample opportunity for discussion and dialog. A willingness to share will make this a great discussion regardless of one’s starting point or perspective.

Refugee Center and Community School
From the IU13 Commnity Education Mar. 8 Newsletter
Fifteen years ago during the time between Thanksgiving and Christmas, a group of teachers at Reynolds Middle School (RMS) took note of students with the greatest needs and knew they wanted to help. That year, the teachers created a list of 40 students and started the Secret Angel Program. Items such as uniforms, socks, hats, scarves, mittens, toiletries, and a holiday gift were donated by community partners and delivered to students. Families were thrilled and thankful for the generosity and support. The following year, 100 students received a holiday gift bag. Last year, Reynolds was able to provide 141-holiday gift bags to students.
This year, with the help of the Lancaster community, every student at Reynolds was provided with a holiday gift. The Rotary Club of Lancaster raised a grand total of $6,500. This donation, coupled with additional funds that the Refugee Center and Community School raised through the Extraordinary Give, provided a $20 gift card for every student at Reynolds Middle School (a total of $9,200). Staff and teachers visited students’ homes to wish them a happy holiday and surprise them with the present.
IU13 Community School at Reynolds wants to send a big THANK YOU to the Rotary Club, Extraordinary Give donors, staff, and teachers for the opportunity to put a smile on the faces of each one of our students this year.

Joys & Concerns
Joy from Bob McClenathan: My second grandchild was born this morning August 3 at 3:19am. Mom and baby are fine. Grandparents are super.
Concern from Jess May: Per latest CDC guidance, people in areas reporting “substantial” transmission rates, which includes Lancaster County, are urged to again wear masks indoors regardless of their vaccination status.
Joy from President Rob: After Rob ran over a screwdriver, he was able to make it to a shop to get the tire repaired.
Joy from Kathy Hainley: For the first time since the pandemic started, Kathy will fly to California to see her grandson. She is returning on August 14.
