Rotary Club of Wappingers Falls Honors Student Artists at “Art for Peace” Awards Ceremony - 46 Wappingers Central School District Students Participate in Inspiring Community Arts Initiative
WAPPINGERS FALLS, NY (May 17, 2026). Under beautiful spring skies at historic Mesier Park, the Rotary Club of Wappingers Falls proudly hosted its Art for Peace Awards Ceremony on Saturday afternoon, recognizing the creativity, vision, and talent of student artists from the Wappingers Central School District (WCSD).
A total of 46 students submitted original artwork expressing their individual visions of peace, hope, and understanding. From these outstanding submissions, 11 students were recognized with top honors, including five first-place awards, three second-place awards, and three third-place awards.
“This was a truly inspiring afternoon,” said Dr. Richard Thurston, President of the Rotary Club of Wappingers Falls. “In a world too often marked by division and uncertainty, these young artists reminded us of the power of creativity, empathy, and hope. Their artwork gave all of us confidence that our future is in very capable and creative hands.”
The event was presented through a partnership between the Rotary Club of Wappingers Falls and the Wappingers Central School District, the ninth-largest school district in New York State.
Representing the school district were Dr. Dwight Bonk, Superintendent of Schools; Bonnie King, Director of Fine & Performing Arts; and dedicated teachers and staff who supported student participation in the program.
Representing Rotary were Dr. Richard Thurston, Club President; Randy Ross; and Steve Crew.
The event was also attended by several distinguished community leaders, including:
• County Legislator Robert Faust, Dutchess County Legislator
• Anil Beephan, New York State Assemblyman
• Jennifer Niznik, Village of Wappingers Falls Trustee
A special acknowledgment was extended to Lee Burns and DCH Wappingers Falls Toyota, whose sponsorship helped make the event possible and reflects their ongoing partnership with Rotary in supporting youth-focused community initiatives.
The Art for Peace program was created to encourage students to explore themes of peace, compassion, understanding, and global citizenship through artistic expression—values that align closely with Rotary International’s longstanding commitment to peacebuilding and youth development.
“This event demonstrated what is possible when schools, civic organizations, local businesses, and community leaders come together to support young people,” Thurston added. “We hope this will become a cherished annual tradition.”
