I have been a member of Carmel Rotary for six years. There were several reasons why I joined. I first learned about Rotary through my father. He joined for the business networking, but he always had a true reputation for ethics in our small Georgia town.

This was something I admired in my father and it had a real influence on my development. Also, I have always remembered our family hosting a Rotary Exchange Student for the weekend. The young woman was from Iceland, and she was fascinated with our Barbie dolls. I was probably about 10 years old at the time, and we enjoyed her visit very much, as she shared pictures and information about her home country. For me, the idea of Rotary had to do with ethics and connecting with people from all over the world. Another reason for joining Carmel Rotary was to connect with others in my community.

After raising 4 children, attending graduate school, and working full time, I had lost my local connections. I had very little time to be social. In addition, I had joined a company that promoted wellness products and had hoped to meet people interested in their health. That Rotary was involved in community service was just icing on the cake.

I never knew what a positive impact Rotary would have on my life. I have met people that I have enjoyed both as working/service partners, and as friends. I have met people that I consider terrific role models and resources. I have had a true opportunity to feel as if I am helping to make a difference in my community and in the world. Rotary has enriched me as a person, has challenged me to grow, and has given me opportunities to serve others in meaningful ways.

The Foundation Fund has provided me with a vehicle to give to an organization that truly assists people here and abroad to develop skills and economic resources that will help them to become independent and self-sufficient. I look forward to another year of service within the club, and feel grateful for finding such a fun and dedicated group of people.
