Chili Cookoff
Posted by Edward Covelli
Hot chili, beautiful weather, happy people and great music teamed up at Camp Herrlich to make the Carmel Rotary's 2nd Annual Chili Cookoff a fantastic event. The day started off with the music of the Acme Acoustic band and the smell of chili.

Soon, things were getting heated as the competition doled out the chili. The professional contestants were judged on taste, texture and appearance byprofessional BBQ and Chili Judge, Alan Schneider, a Mahopac Rotarian. Although things were very close, with the final scores within a half point of each other, the results came in and the winner was Lou's Restaurant with a score of 49.5. Bucci Brother's Deli, and Chef Theo of Camp Herrlich came in second and third, respectively. Compliments to the other professional contestants, George's Place, Sentrista Grill, and Countryside Kitchen.
In the amateur division, the public voted on their favorite chili. After counting all the votes, first place went to Lou Santangelo, then Gary representing the Brewster Rotary took second while John Bauer took third place. But the voting was close and they just beat out Theresa Santise, the Hungarian chili team of Melinda and Eva, and Charlene DeAndrea. And although the other six other contestants couldn't take the heat, everyone's chili was delicious!
In addition to hot chili, there was mild chili, no hot spice chili, vegetarian chili and even hot dogs. The participants enjoyed a beautiful day listening to music under the bandstand, playing sports in the camp's fields, and perusing the displays set up by local merchants and groups, while the little ones got their faces painted.
The proceeds from the event will go to fund local and international projects that the Carmel Rotary Club has been involved in for over 40 years. Some of the proceeds will go to charities of the winner's choice. For more information about the club, visit www.carmelrotary.org
