CARMEL - More than 1.2 million Rotarians serve worldwide and Carmel's Al Lotrecchiano has been recognized with the international organization's highest award.

Carmel Rotary President Amy Covais made the surprise announcement at last week's meeting when she told a gathering at George's Place in Carmel that Lotrecchiano, a life long Rotarian, had received the "Service Above Self Award."

Covais explained that Rotary International created the honor to "recognize those Rotarians who truly embody Rotary's motto of 'service above self.' Only 150 Rotarians from around the world have been selected for this distinction. Al, we thank you. We love you and we congratulate you for this wonderful recognition. Carmel's Mr. Rotary truly deserves it."

Those in attendance rose and gave Lotrecchiano an ovation.

Lotrecchiano, a retired Mahopac businessman, who resides with his wife, Dimmy, in Carmel, called the honor "overwhelming. I'd much rather be in the trenches looking up at someone else being honored. Rotary has become a major part of my life. I love Rotary and I love what it stands for and the people involved with it."

Veteran Rotarian Bill Nichols chimed in: "We love you too, Al. Keep up the good work!"

This year Rotary International is celebrating its 101st birthday. Lotrecchiano will receive the formal award at a dinner in April. This article appeared in the Putnam County Courier: Click here for original article.
