Stories
Debbie & Danielle from the Family Abuse Shelter joined us to discuss their program. The shelter was founded in 1979 and has operated solely on grants and donations from the community. The initial program served the citizens of Miami County that were involved in domestic violence. As time went on, the program opened their doors to those effected by homelessness. The homeless program began in 1985. In 2018, the program provided 10,349 units of emergency shelter and aided in 725 cases of domestic violence.

Why relocate?

The Family Abuse Shelter is relocating to 530 Crescent Drive in Troy, Ohio.
Why is the facility needing to move:
  • They have outgrown the facility
  • There is no safe place for the children to play
  • They are consistently at capacity
  • They need to be handicap accessible
There is a capital campaign in the works to fundraiser for the relocation. Debbie was proud to share that there will be a room dedicated to honor a fellow Rotarian, Cheryl Stiefel Francis. It will be called Cheryl’s Room.

Rebecca, the executive director of The Piqua Compassion Network joined us as well. She stated, “we serve in crisis.” The Piqua Compassion Network & the Family Abuse Shelter work hand and hand to serve Miami County.
Hailey McPherson & Tessa Arnett joined us from the Piqua High School.
