In 2005 he traveled to Uganda to be with his daughter. This first trip was meant as a tourist visit, visiting beautiful landscapes and seeing animals such as lions, elephants, mountain gorillas in their native habitat. It was an exciting one-month adventure. On that trip he began hearing about the atrocities in northern Uganda being committed by a rebel group called the "Lord's Resistance Army", known simply as the LRA. In 23 years over 30,000 children have been abducted to serve as child soldiers and sex slaves. His daughter had been in the area for a short period of time and talked about the devastation of the area. Upon his return to the United States he began emailing some of his Ugandan contacts to find out more about what was occurring. A Ugandan NGO mentioned that there was a very talented high school student named Nancy who needed support to go to university. Thus began the charity Children UP. Now comprised of six volunteer retired teachers and two other community members, Children UP tries to identify good students needing help in getting an education. Recently the dean of the university education department in Uganda has identified 8 students who are talented but who cannot possibly afford a high school education. We have begun supporting the education of these students and look forward to helping others. Prior to pressing the pause button on the real world and returning to school, Mr. Travnicek worked for eight years on Wall Street (and briefly London) in the sales and trading arena. His area of concentration was credit derivatives, specifically as they relate to counterparty risk. Mr. Travnicek is a product of the Midwest and was born an Ohio State Buckeye fan. However, over the last few years he has made the eerily natural transition to rooting for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He is a travel junkie, having visited over 30 different countries, and enjoys skiing, biking, surfing, and nearly any sport with a ball. Mr. Travnicek's focus with Working Bikes includes volunteer coordination, warehouse logistics, and ensuring the organization's long term sustainability. pete@workingbikes.org http://workingbikes.org 4/28/2011 Andy Crestodina Topic: Search Engine Optimization Andy Crestodina Strategic Director, Orbit Media Studios Since January 1, 2000, Andy has been immersed web design and digital marketing.
