Global Smile Foundation (GSF) was formed in 2008 to alleviate the suffering of underserved patients born with facial congenital deformities with special emphasis on cleft lips and palates. The founding members are a group of dedicated volunteers and medical professionals who have been actively involved with global outreach programs for the last 24 years in countries in Latin America, Africa and the Indian Subcontinent. Mr. Paul Cody (pictured here with a patient), will talk to our Club about his involvement with GSF.

Debra Shore is a Commissioner on the Board of the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago. Elected to a six-year term in 2006, Debra was the first openly gay person elected countywide in Cook County who was not a judicial candidate. (Debra was re-elected to a second term in 2012.) Debra has been working to “green” the agency. She helped to gain a majority of board members in voting to support cleaning up the Chicago waterways and has fought to open up District contracts to competitive bidding, to push for a strong storm water management ordinance, and promotes numerous green infrastructure projects. In recognition of her work, she recently received the Public Officials Award from the Water Environment Federation.

Project C.U.R.E. is the world’s largest distributor of donated medical supplies and equipment to developing countries and partners with Rotary Clubs to deliver cargo containers of medical donations to healthcare facilities in developing countries. Headquartered in Denver, local Rotaries are a fantastic source of support. Rotary members volunteer on a monthly basis at our distribution warehouse, and the Littleton Rotary was instrumental in supporting Project C.U.R.E. to purchase the Denver warehouse.

Cliff Petrak of Chicago holds a B.S. degree in mathematics from DePaul University and an M.S. in mathematics from Chicago State University. Now retired, Cliff enjoyed a 40-year math teaching and coaching career at his alma mater, Brother Rice H.S. in Chicago. For his academic and coaching accomplishments in math, baseball, bowling and hockey during that time span, he has been recognized by his induction into six different halls of fame. Dr. Julia W. Rath has a doctoral degree in sociology from The University of Chicago and an M.A. in philosophy and social policy from The George Washington University. She was awarded a post-doctoral research fellowship in Behavioral Sciences Training from the Medical and Health Research Association of New York City in association with the National Development and Research Institutes. She has also been a producer of radio and film. Currently a consultant in the area of health and human services research, she is a reiki master with interests in yoga, alternative medicine, and unconventional approaches to health and healing. Dr. Rath lives in the Chicago area and is always grateful to speak before a hometown audience.

In 2006, Lisa began working with the Wheaton Chamber of Commerce as the Director of Membership, and in 2007, became the Executive Director. She joined CASA of DuPage County as Executive Director in November of 2009 and feels privileged to lead the only organization in the county advocating for abused and neglected children, who through no fault of their own, find themselves in the juvenile court system.

The Chicago Area Waterways (CAWS) is a 77-mile network of canals that provide drainage, navigation and recreation for the city and numerous suburbs in the metropolitan region. For over 100 years, these waterways have served as a connecting link between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River watersheds. Since the opening of the Erie and Welland Canals in the 1820s and the St. Lawrence Seaway in the 1950s, aquatic invasive species have been an issue for the Great Lakes. Recently, the appearance of Asian carp in the Mississippi River and their movement upstream in the Illinois River has given rise to concern for the potential movement of this invasive species into the Great Lakes through the CAWS. This concern has resulted in litigation, proposals, and studies to separate the two watersheds, thereby imposing one barrier to the movement of Asian carp.

Travelers Aid staff and volunteers provide one-on-one service for at-risk passengers by accompanying them through such processes as flight check-in, going through security, transferring to gates, getting to baggage claim and/or sitting with them during a layover. In 2013 more than 600 O'Hare passengers were assisted. In recent years, Travelers Aid Chicago has expanded its presence with more than 125 volunteers now serving O'Hare.
