The Welcome Basket project was off to a great start due to the huge outpouring of support from airlines and airport related companies.  Tenants of the Mercy Housing Lakefront are receiving baskets loaded with toiletries, towels and household supplies.  If a tenant has a child, often a stuffed animal is included.  The outpouring from the community has been so great that baskets that were originally intended for just the new residents have been given to existing tenants as well.  Remaining supplies are being shared with emergency shelters in the area.

Recognized by Rotary as the Best New Project, our Welcome Baskets endeavor has taken on a life of its own!

 About the Welcome Baskets:

The Welcome Baskets are created by loading a laundry basket with toiletries, towels and and household cleaning supplies.  New materials for the baskets are purchased with funds donated by the Rotary Club of Chicago-OHare, a grant from Rotary District 6450 and individual donors.  To date, 30 baskets have been purchased and filled.  These baskets have been distributed to the nine Mercy Housing Lakefront buildings where new tenants are expected in the short term.  The 30 baskets included the following items: 1 Bath Towel, 1 Hand Towel, 1 Wash Cloth, 1 Dish Towel, 1 Dish Cloth, 1 All Purpose Cleaner, 1 Box Laundry Detergent, 1 Package Dryer Sheets, 1 Bottle Dish Soap, Dust Pan with Broom,1 Roll of Paper Towels, 4-pack of Toilet Paper, Shaving Cream, 10-pack Shavers/Razors, Deodorant, 3-pack bath soap, 1 Mini pack Tampons, 1 Roll Dental Floss, 1 Mini First Aid Kit, toothbrushes, 1 airline amenity kit and toothpaste.  Each welcome basket includes a gift card indicating that the basket has been provided through the Rotary Club of Chicago-O'Hare.
