We had a great group of Rotarians, spouses and friends show up to continue clean up on the Island and do a controlled burn to get rid of a plethora of twigs and branches.  The Island will soon become host to some community events, and we wanted to make it look the best we could - and have some fun in the meanwhile.  Burning on the island must notify the City, Police and Fire Department, it is not authorized without the knowledge of those agencies. Productive and fun - kind of a description of Rotary in a nutshell!

Thank you to Alpena Rotarians, Steve Wright and Bobby Barrigar, and friend John Anderson for cleaning up Rotary Island after the recent historic storms.

The bridge to Rotary Island is now cleared and accessible, as well as the path to the Rotary fishing platform. We appreciate you taking time out of your day to clean up so our community members can safely access this beautiful area!

Are you as excited about our upcoming auction as we are?  We'll have over 25 beer and wine vendors, 2 food vendors, and well over 100 auction items!  This is a "don't miss" event - the net proceeds go back to the community!  Watch our Facebook page "Brew on the Bay" for more details and don't forget you can buy tickets in advance and SKIP THE ENTRY LINES at Perch's IGA, Wolverine Credit Alpena credit unions, Star Staffing, Robert Barrigar State Farm Insurance and Alpena Area Chamber of Commerce.

This popular event returns on Thursday, March 6, 2025.  Held at the Aplex, tickets are $25 and include entry to the event and the opportunity to bid on live, chance and silent auction items, a souvenir glass and 6 tastings from a wide variety of beer and wine vendors.  Don't miss it!  All ,funds raised are used toward community projects like the Splash Park and Rotary Island improvements. Tickets are available from Perch's IGA, Chamber of Commerce, Bob Barrigar Farm Bureau Insurance, Wolverine Credit Union Alpena branches, Star Staffing and any Rotarian.

Rotary Club of Alpena raises funds through annual activities and then donates those funds back to the community.  One of our regular activities is to donate a book signed by a weekly presenter to local users like the library and childcare centers.  This further supports the international goal of literacy promoted by Rotary. We are pleased to have made such a donation just recently.

At our annual installation meeting on June 24, we honored our international board of directors with decorations including world flags and banners from the countries that represent our board.  We also had a meal that represented food from the various countries, and a quiz for each table to guess which countries they had represented by their centerpieces based on some country information.

We did a little roasting of outgoing President Ed and gave a warm welcome to incoming President Jackie. Awarded our Rotarian of the Year to Angie Dubie-Fox, and recognized several Paul Harris fellows.

Rotary Island is in bloom!
Between the cultivated plantings, the wild flowers and the gazebo Rotary Island is one of the most beautiful places in the summer!  Take the opportunity to walk around the Island as it shows off this summer.
In the center of Alpena, along the bipath running adjacent to River street, tand across the river from the NOAA Sanctuary, Rotary Island can easily be accessed from downtown.  It's a beautiful oasis of incredible blooms!  Don't miss this gem!
Worth a short walk from downtown, right on the Thunder Bay River, visible from the 2nd and 9th avenue bridges.

Rotarians and guests gathered at Arzo Entertainment Park to say thanks (and roast!) to President Stacey for her service during 2022-2023, and welcome incoming President Ed to his year beginning July 1.

Much fun was had before dinner enjoying the many games and amenities at this gem of a park just north of Alpena.  Joanne Gallagher was named Rotarian of the Year.
Our island gazebo has the phrase “May Peace Prevail on Earth” in several different languages.  Recently, Rotarian Danielle Green caught some peace on the island between a cat and a turtle. Beautiful shot of nature at its best!
Our club gathered with current and former members to celebrate 100 years of service to the Alpena area.  We were treated to the beautiful space at Art in the Loft, fantastic food and ice sculptures by Jon Benson, music courtesy of Kat Tomaszewksi, delicious desserts from Annette Carlson, Refreshments by Party On LLC and beautiful floral centerpieces by Classic Designs.  We were pleased to honor long term member Ralph Diethelm with an Honorary membership in the club, and enjoyed the Emcee skills of Mike Kelly.  Many thanks to the committee members: John Benson, Ann Burton, Mary Cosbitt, Ann Diamond, Mary Dunckel, Jackie Nicoll and Wendy Servia.
On Saturday, November 20, a group of Rotarians added Christmas to the Island by decorating our gazebo and other island features.  It's simply stunning!  Make sure and stop by the Island after dark to check out their fine work!

Rotarian Mike Kelly caught these beautiful shots of Rotary Island at night.  Keep checking to see what we have in store for the holidays!
In August, we had a great turnout for planting new landscaping on the Island.  The 100th anniversary island improvements will continue through next year.  Keep watching for more photos!

.
The flowers are blooming and we continue to make improvements on the island this summer in celebration of our club's 100th year of service to the Alpena  area
We had a great turnout for our annual meeting that gave a huge "thanks" to outgoing president Wendy and a great big "welcome" to incoming president Joanne.  We were pleased to recognize Chuck Sherwin as our Rotarian of the Year, and further recognize Danielle Green as our Rotarian of the Year for 2020-2021 since Covid kind of stole her thunder!
