Over $100.00 in Happy Dollars were raised today, many of them in appreciation of Dan Wessberg's service in Afghanistan and for his presentation of a plaque given in memory of Bill Swales, accompanied by a United States flag flown over Camp Leatherneck, Helmand Province, Afghanistan on August 17, 2012.
Your editor was happy for the safe return of Dan Wessberg from Afghanistan and for the announcement that one of our former presenters, Alan Krutchkoff had been awarded $10,000 for the Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon which he founded in 2006. The award was one of about 200 provided by the Chase Community Giving Project.
Nancy Swales was thrilled to have both Dan and Geri with her at The Courtyard today.
Jan Doornbosch was happy for the birth of his grand-daughter in Holland on August 29.
Lisa Peck and Irma Chazotte were happy for the opportunity to sell members $5.00 Savings Passes to Lord and Taylor's fund raising shopping event which will be held at The Fashion Center in Paramus on October 4.
Guest speaker Michael Manna was happy to be visiting with us once again.
Steve Fox was happy to say that his son had been named captain of his school's soccer team.

Sixteen cases of Dictionaries have been ordered for all third graders in Park Ridge, Montvale, and Woodcliff Lake Schools. They will be delivered in mid September to Jan's warehouse. (THANKS SO MUCH, JAN!) We will need several members to volunteer in the distribution of the Dictionaries to third graders at Memorial School, Montvale, Dorchester School, Woodcliff Lake, and the West Ridge, Eastbrook and Our Lady of Mercy Schools in Park Ridge. Distribution should be completed by the end of October. Rotary book plates are ready and waiting.
Lord and Taylor Savings Passes are now available from Lisa Peck or Irma Chazotte for the October 4 sales event at the Fashion Center in Paramus. THE CLUB KEEPS ALL MONEY FROM THE SALES OF THESE $5.00 PASSES. Sell 200 passes - earn $1,000.00. Plus, the club will receive a percentage of the sales credited to our club on the day of the event. Each member is urged to be responsible for at least 10 passes. Sell them or gift them to family, neighbors or friends, or GIVE THEM AWAY to clients or acquaintances as promotional tools. We can't afford to pass this opportunity up!
Fay Logan announced that plans are in place for our 2nd annual St.Paddy's Day celebration to be held on Friday, March 15 at the Park Ridge Elks Club. Nightingale Catering will be providing the food once again.

Guest speaker Michael Manna, senior partner of Manna and Associates in Ridgewood, spoke today about federal and state estate and inheritance taxes, what is currently in place and what might be expected in 2013. Licensed by the NJ Board of Accountancy as a provider of mandatory continuing education for public accountants, certified public accountants and certified financial planners, Michael raised several key points in his talk:

- Everyone should have three essential documents: a will, a durable power of attorney and a living will/medical power of attorney.
- Seek out members of the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys for help in estate planning.
- As of January 1, 2013, federal estate taxes will rise from 0% to 42% for any amounts over $1,000,000.
- In NJ, there is no estate tax on assets passing to a spouse, but if more than a grand total of $675,000 passes to persons other than a spouse, taxes are due. That amount includes annuities, life insurance, IRAs, 401Ks and joint property.
- Wills drawn before July 1, 2002 may not take into account the NJ estate tax and should be reviewed.
