President Bob Bustard was proud to introduce River Vale resident Scott Karrel to club members present at Domani Thursday night, October 9. Years ago, Scott played on Bob’s Little League baseball team with Bob’s son. Since then he has done much to improve the lives of hundreds of school children in Namibia and Ghana.

While volunteering in Namibia 3 years ago, Scott witnessed first-hand how primary schools in the rural areas were leaving children behind. With a desire to improve conditions at the school in which he taught, he was able to raise enough money from family and friends to help create the school’s first library. Over the next several months he raised $7,000 to purchase 2 computers, books, new chairs, paint and a chalkboard for the library.

Statistics sometimes make problems seem insurmountable.

Recognizing that small acts can make a big difference, Scott created the Unlock Foundation, a 501(3) non-profit, in April, 2011 to work on several small projects, one school at a time. Partnering with teachers, students and local communities, the foundation’s goal is to meet the fundamental needs deemed necessary to create a thriving school.
