Make Ups: Attending the 5K meeting of 9/3 were Steve Fox, Stuart Gold, Bernie Cohen, Steve Hopper and Pat DiRosa. Stuart, Bernie and Steve Hopper were at a second 5K meeting as well. Stuart spent two days at RLI meetings, Bernie attended the club’s Foundation meeting on 8/19 and Jan visited our sister club in Holland on Sept. 1.

Sunshine: Members were particularly saddened to hear of the passing of Mauro Cappitella on Wednesday, September 3. Our condolences go out to Mauro’s family. Mauro's obituary appeared in The Record on September 4. You can find it here: http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/northjersey

Members also learned of the passing of former member Everett Conklin this past spring.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who are currently contending with adversity of one type or another.

Happiness:

Nancy was happy to have her daughter, Marty, and son-in-law, Dan with her today.

Jan was happy to report that his youngest grand-daughter, now 2, is walking well. Jan was also happy to report that on his latest visit to a meeting of our sister club in Holland, members raised enough money to buy a sponsorship in our 5K. We are so thankful for their support.

Steve H. shared his wife’s happiness that school is back in session.

Many dollars were offered in memory of Mauro and his life of service.

Borough of Park Ridge and American Legion Post 153 will be holding a Memorial Observance on Thursday, September 11 at Veterans’ Park beginning at 10:00.

Our 2nd 5K Run/Walk with the Halfway Hounds is fast approaching. September 21 is only 2 weeks away and there is MUCH TO DO. This event, so successful last year, can only succeed this year if EVERYONE in the club assists in some way. Posted in the Download section of the website to help you along are the SPONSORSHIP FLYER, REGISTRATION FORM, and LETTER TO SPONSORS. In the days ahead, attend a meeting; reach out for SPONSORS; get runners; secure donations of water and/or food; volunteer on the day of the event; DO SOMETHING TO ASSURE THE SUCCESS OF THIS EVENT! Let’s make this an event of which we can all be proud. Members should be sure to respond to Dick Beattie’s e-mailed spreadsheet to schedule themselves for a specific activity that day.

All members, but newer members in particular, are encouraged to attend the Vocational Assembly in Edison on October 7 and the Rotary Leadership Institute being held at our own Courtyard by Marriott on October 11. Stuart Gold is once again in charge of running the RLI program this year. Now in its 23rd year, the Institute serves as a training ground for upcoming leaders in the 28 districts of the northeastern part of the USA and Bermuda.

Both the Vocational Assembly and RLI provide members with an excellent chance to explore the dynamic WORLD of Rotary, to engage with Rotarians from numerous clubs around the state and region, and to learn first-hand of the many inspiring, rewarding and meaningful activities engaged in by fellow Rotarians as they work to make the world a better place.

The annual Rotary UN Day will be held this year on Saturday, November 1. Each year at Rotary UN Day, more than 1300 Rotarians including many Rotary International Directors, Foundation Trustees, past Senior Leaders, and guests come together at UN Headquarters in New York. The program is designed to inspire and educate all participants as well as provide insight into the relationship between Rotary and the United Nations. In the past, the day has been very successful and has sold out. DON’T BE DISAPPOINTED – REGISTER EARLY!

The day will begin at 9:30am and conclude by 4:00pm. Lunch will be in the UN Cafeteria, over- looking the East River at 1:00pm. For more info and to register go to http://riunday.org
