Make-Ups: Earning make-ups at the September District Staff Meeting were Stuart Gold and Whitney deBordenave; Stuart also had make-ups at meetings of the Paramus Club and the Northern Valley Club; Bob Bustard attended the Tenafly Club Meeting and Lester Kempner earned a make-up at a meeting of the Mid-Bergen Club;

Sunshine: Bob Balentine recently broke his arm and Cindy Rose will be undergoing knee surgery soon. We wish them both a speedy recovery.

Linda Blick’s return visit to the club brought in several happy dollars.

Club members were also happy to have 12 guests present at today’s meeting.

Fay L. was happy to have attended a wedding in New Hampshire.

Jeri and Linda Westberg were happy to be here to celebrate Nancy’s 86th birthday.

Steve H. was happy to have received so many calls and cards during his recent illness. He was also happy to be celebrating his son’s birthday.

Bob G. was happy to get back to a club meeting and for June Bertini’s candidacy for mayor.

June B. was happy that the town’s emergency preparedness plan was in place for the expected bad weather.

Lois K. was happy to have been able to celebrate family birthdays and anniversaries during a recent trip to Mobile, Alabama.

Ray F. was happy for the first anniversary of his son and daughter-in-law.

June B. was proud to offer an additional happy dollar in recognition of Ray Falcon being awarded one of the Park Ridge Community Service Awards for 2015.

Whitney deB. was happy for her recent trip to Richmond, VA.

Stuart G. was happy for the upcoming Rotary Leadership Institute.

Dick Beattie announced that the District’s Gift of Life Program is looking to our Club and the Allendale Club for a family to host a young child coming to the U.S. on October 7 for surgery. The responsibilities of a host family, besides the obvious housing and meals, extend essentially to transportation. There are, typically, quite a few trips back and forth to the designated hospital. The host family receives enormous support from the GOL staff throughout the hosting process. The average hosting timeframe is about 3 months. Occasionally, complications arise and the time commitment can grow significantly. Give some thought to hosting. You will be working and interacting with some amazing people The rewards are hard to put into words. Contact Dick for further information.

DG Peter Wells has announced that Linda Hanlon was picked to receive the Vocational Service Award for District 7490 at the New Jersey Vocational Assembly and encouraged all to attend the event. This year’s Vocational Assembly will take place on the afternoon and evening of Tuesday, October 6th, at the Pines Manor, 2085 Route 27, Edison, New Jersey 08817. Cindy Rose described this year’s Lord & Taylor’s Fundraising Shopping Event being held at The Fashion Center in Ridgewood from 9:00 AM until 11:00 PM on SATURDAY, November 14. The club receives ALL proceeds from the sale of $5.00 Savings Passes. In addition, we will receive a percentage of all purchases. All members are encouraged to attend a NJ Devil’s hockey game on December 19 when they play against the Anaheim Ducks.

Tues., 11/10 - RI President, K.R.Ravindran will visit our District on Tuesday November 10, 2015. Greet him at a "Celebration of Rotary Service" Party to be held at Season’s, Washington Township, from 6.30 to 10.30. The "Celebration of Rotary Service" will recognize District 7490 Rotarians with over 40 years of Rotary Service including our own Dr. Robert Balentine, Dr. Stuart Gold and Ralph Padovano.

Two and a half years ago Linda Blick, long-time social worker, trauma specialist and life-long lover of animals, gave a fascinating talk to members of the Park Ridge Rotary Club. The subject of her presentation that day was Tails of Hope Foundation, Inc., a not-for-profit organization she founded in 2006 which is dedicated to advancing the field of veterinary medicine and helping to eradicate cancer and other life-threatening diseases affecting companion animals.

The original mission of Tails of Hope was and continues to be helping companion animals live longer, healthier lives by providing assistance, educational and informational programs. However, the Foundation has expanded its services and programs to do much more.

One of its programs, called Finding One Another: Courage beyond Measure, seeks to provide public recognition to the Search and Rescue Community which does so much unheralded work for the benefit of society. Another is the recently launched pilot project called Pediatrics and Pets: Coping with Cancer Together.

Yet another was the program presented to club members Friday, October 2 at Montvale’s Courtyard by Marriott by Linda and colleagues Annie Brodie, founder of the original Camp Unleashed, Dr. Donna Manderino of the Park Ridge Animal Hospital and Sgt. David Kist and his service dog Patrick. Together they have created Camp Hope Unleashed, a specialized program designed to provide PTSD afflicted veterans and their Service K9s with a respite, a place to call “home” with their own brothers and sisters-in-arms, through cutting-edge support before, during and after camp. The group’s all-volunteer team of veterans, mental health and trauma staff, camp and canine specialists and a sports adaptive expert will help the veterans fully enjoy their experience and move them forward toward attaining peace of mind.
