11-7-14 CLUB MEETING AT THE CORNERSTONE

Make Ups: Stuart Gold earned make-ups at the Allendale Club, Bergen Highlands Club and at the District Staff Meeting. Earning make-ups at the DGE Peter’s Dinner were Bob Balentine, Dick Beattie, Bob Bustard, Irma Chazotte, Pat DiRosa, Stuart Gold, Cindy Rose, George Sherman, Brittany Vozza, Peter Wells and Phil Wells.

Those who attended our Pot Luck “Fun” Raiser on Thursday night were especially happy for having experienced a great evening thanks to the efforts of Phil Wells, Tara Scheuerman, Ryan Cangialosi, Brittany Vozza, Whitney Debordenave and all those who contributed sponsorships, tricky tray items, food and appetites.
Cindy R. was happy that Gypsy Rose was awarded 1st place for best costume in a Halloween Contest sponsored by Petco.
Pat D. was happy to be going to NYC for dinner and to see Wicked.
Ray F. was happy to have an audience to hear his talk today and for his recent week and a half vacation in Ocean City, Md.
June B. was happy for her friend’s health.
Phil W. was happy that things turned out as well as they did at the “Fun” Raiser.

Time to order FRESH ORANGES AND GRAPEFRUIT! Our 27th annual FRUIT SALE is underway. Order forms can be downloaded from our website. Half-cases - $28.00; full cases - $46.00. Orders must be in to Bernie Cohen by Friday, November 28. Fruit will be available for pick-up on Saturday, December 6 between 10:00 and noon in the parking lot of 50 Chestnut Ridge Rd., Montvale.
Dictionaries are in! Let George Sherman know if you want to help prepare and/or deliver them to 3rd graders in Dorchester, Memorial, East Brook, West Ridge or Our Lady of Mercy.
Dick Beattie reminded members of the arrival of a Gift of Life child from the Philippines this month. Posted on our website are copies of GOL materials sent out by current District Chairman David Whitlock for the benefit of anyone who may wish to become involved in this most rewarding endeavor.

Club member Ray Falcon, who is serving as Chairman of the District 7490 Special Needs Committee this year, was our guest speaker at The Courtyard on Friday. In his talk he described the job sampling initiative for students with disabilities that he first conceived in 2010.

Entitled Best Foot Forward, the project is designed to help private not-for-profit special needs schools in Bergen, Passaic and Hudson Counties identify businesses that are willing to take a student with disabilities as an intern. The concept allows the school to evaluate whether the student has potential to enter the workforce, affords the business the chance to work with and understand better persons with disabilities, and provides the student with a real life work experience that cannot be duplicated in the classroom.
Students are accompanied by a job coach from the school to supervise and assist them. Thus the student gains real world work experience before aging out of the school environment. This is a wonderful opportunity for special needs students to discover their talents, gain confidence in their abilities and ultimately become productive members of society.
Ray encouraged members who may be interested in participating in the initiative to describe the needs your business may have. Best Foot Forward will work with you and a local private school to find the right student to satisfy your needs and coordinate all aspects of the internship.
