Program

On June 3, 2021 at a virtual meeting via Zoom, Park Ridge Rotary members welcomed guest speaker, Jake Whalen. Jake is past president (and current member) of the Spring Lake/Brielle Rotary Club.  His talk was about Medicare, considered by many to be a bewildering and anxiety-producing subject that concerns everyone, including parents, grandparents, relatives, neighbors and you.  Jake’s agency, Senior Moments Medicare Solutions is headquartered in Manasquan, NJ.

The information presented was a series of explanations of Medicare terms and their meaning, including the following:
  • The information and symbols displayed on Medicare Cards (A= hospitalization and B=physician portion). The former does not involve a premium but physician services do.
  • CMS stands for the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services
  • There are a variety of standardized supplemental Medigap plans to choose from; the “gap” refers to potential “co-pays” and/or “co-insurance” expenses that people owe for healthcare services that Medicare does not cover.  For example, Medicare typically covers 80% medical services; patients pay for the remaining 20%.
  • There are many “Supplemental” Insurance Plans.  The two general types are: 1. Medigap Plans, which include three parts paid for separately: – Original Medicare (A+B), a supplemental insurance policy, and a drug plan also known as “Part D”.  2.  Medicare Advantage Plans, in contrast, combine all three of the foregoing parts into one low monthly payment.  However, Medicare Advantage Plans may have “co-pays” and “co-insurance” amounts depending on your state and county.  But they also have annual “maximum out of pocket limits” to protect people from catastrophic medical expenses.
As Dan mentioned before the presentation, people make lots of assumptions about Medicare, which can negatively impact their health and harm their finances.  Fortunately for us, Jake was able to clearly show the types of personal financial risks that people face with Medicare and importantly, how people can protect themselves and their families from these risks.
