Program:

The Park Ridge Rotary enjoyed a presentation by Dr. Jim Cole on the Malawi Orthopedic Project as well as an update from Peter Wells on his recent Rotary International trip to Brazil.

Malawi Orthopedic Project
Jim Cole has been associated with the Malawi Orthopedic Project since the 1980s and has been there personally three times. Malawi is a small country with limited medical resources. A Canadian doctor, and Rotary member, Ed Blair, recognized that with only 14 doctors in the whole country there was a need to train people with at least some medical knowledge to provide more advanced fracture repairs. Ed returned to Canada and got several grants to begin a program that trained four Physician Assistants and provided salaries and housing.  The emphasis was on treatments that did not involve surgery since the Malawi operating rooms were not as sterile as in more advanced countries.  As of 2014, the program is going well.  Most funds are provided by the United Kingdom and instruments come from India. There are four teachers.  Overall, the project is a wonderful example of the power of Rotary.  One Rotarian had an idea; with persistence and determination he was able to raise enough money to create a viable, self-sustaining medical program.

Rotary International Conference in Brazil
Peter Wells discussed his impressions and special events during his trip to the Rotary International Conference in Brazil. Peter enjoyed a speech given by the past president of Costa Rica who dissolved the military and put the money into parks.  There was another remarkable speech given by an eight-year-old girl on Rotary work with children.  The group had an amazing service project that involved packing about 100,000 meals for Brazilian children in need. Also, he especially enjoyed a dinner with the several people from our district, particularly the story telling.
