Announcements:
by George Sherman

President Bob announced that next week's planned meeting at HUMC-PV has been cancelled. Rather we will meet as usual at The Courtyard by Marriott at 12:15.

President Bob shared Bonnie Sirower’s e-mail: "The Long Term Recovery Group for Hurricane Sandy in Bergen County has asked if Rotary could provide meals for volunteers who are visiting our District to help repair the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy.  We need approximately 23 meals beginning July 22, or gift cards from places like ShopRite or Pathmark to feed approximately 30 volunteers of all ages who will be staying in the hostel that our District helped to build.  If you or your club would like to help, please contact Marisa Santiago at  msantiago@bergenvolunteers.org  at the Bergen Volunteer Center or Mary Ellen Lyons at the South Bergen Rotary at mlyons@moonachie.us.” Bob suggested that volunteers from the club join him in preparing and delivering lunches one day a week for a month. Contact Bob if you can help.

Job transfer has required Lisa Peck to resign from our club. She will be transferring her membership to the Hackensack Club. The club greatly appreciates all Lisa has done for us in the years she has been with us and wish her the very best in her new surroundings.

President Bob announced two new appointments to the Club’s Board of Directors: Ryan Cangialosi agreed to fill Lisa Peck’s seat and Bernie Cohen will assume the seat of Sargeant at Arms Steve Hopper since Steve is not allowed by By-Laws to fill both positions.

Linda Hanlon and Ryan Cangialosi are hard at work with representatives from Halfway Hounds in preparing for our September 22 5K Run/Walk. Registration form, Sponsorship form and Participation Waiver have been put onto the Download section of our website. We need 100% involvement of our membership to make this whole thing work. Sponsorships are available for as little as $100.00.

At our July 17 Board Meeting the Charitable Foundation accepted the recommendations of the Projects Committee to award up to $275.00 to Adopt-a-Soldier Platoon. The money will be used to pay for a ½ page ad in their Salute to American Heroes journal. Also awarded were $200.00 to Charlotte Bennett Schoen for her INTERACT film distribution project of “The Lady” - the life of Aung San Suu Kyi, as part of her Global Justice / Peace Initiative for Rotary; $250.00 for the District7490 support fund for victims of the Oklahoma Hurricanes.

Today’s guest speaker was familiar figure to everyone who regularly attends our meetings at The Courtyard. Joe Franzetti, when not working here, is a volunteer fire-fighter for the Woodcliff Lake Fire Department. Today he came equipped with many of the implements he and his fellow volunteers are trained to use in their work. In his talk, Joe described in detail the challenges involved in training and serving with the fire department.

Since 1933 The Woodcliff Lake Volunteer Fire Department has been responsible for providing fire protection, rescue service and other emergency assistance for the borough. The training required is arduous and thorough. For the past several years now, service in the fire department has been open to women as well as to men. The service these individuals provide to their communities is far beyond that offered by most, as they willingly risk their own safety every day to protect others in need.

Club members and all who benefit from the service of these devoted volunteers greatly appreciate all that they do.
