Sunshine:

Nancy Swales reported that her son Larry will have to have additional tests this week.

Ann’s son, Richard, successfully underwent the amputation of both legs above the knee. He is will be at Care One in Ridgewood for therapy for the next several weeks. We wish Richard and all of the family well as they face the challenges ahead.

Cindy is recuperating at home from her surgery and is hoping to get back to a meeting soon. All join in wishing her a complete and speedy recovery.

Helen Paul may find it necessary to undergo surgery for her back pain. All join in wishing her the best as well.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to all who are currently contending with adversity of one type or another.

Pete Jacobsen offered a financial tribute in memory of his father for all the joy that Rotary brought him throughout his many decades with the club.

Lots of happy dollars followed in memory of Herb and all of his many kindnesses.

Jan Doornbosch was happy to have his grandson Jules with him today.

Nancy Swales was looking forward to a visit from her children and grandchildren as they celebrate Larry’s birthday this week.

Peter Wells was happy that son Phil had bought lunch for him this week.

Irma Chazotte was happy to introduce her guest Bob Puglis to the club.

Brittany Vozza was happy to have had such a great time at her sister’s wedding. She’s also looking forward to the Giants first pre-season game this weekend.

Pat DiRosa was happy to be headed down the shore with her grandkids.

President Bob announced that our next meeting at The Courtyard will not occur until Friday, September 6. Our Thursday evening meeting for July will take place on August 22 when we return to the ever popular Demarest Farms Summer BarBQ Buffet for an evening of good food, good fun and good music. (http://demarestfarms.com/bbqs.html). The following Friday, August 30 will mark the beginning of the Labor Day weekend and there will be no club meeting.

The next meeting of the 5K committee will be Monday, August 19 at 6pm at the Kearny Federal Savings Bank, 207 Old Tappan Road, Old Tappan.

In his AG Report, Stuart Gold urged all members to take advantage of the upcoming Rotary Leadership Institute being held on Saturday, October 12 at our home, THE COURTYARD BY MARRIOTT in Montvale. Register on line at http://www.rlinea.com/Registration.html.

Steve Hopper announced that the Park Ridge Chamber of Commerce and the Park Ridge Marriott are hosting a Multi-Chamber Event on Tuesday evening, September 17 between 6:00 and 8:30 pm. The cost is $25.00 per person pre-paid ($30.00 at the door) which include hors d’oeuvres and one drink. Contact mmatula@vozza.com to register before September 10.

Guest speaker at the club’s August 16 meeting was Mr. Dick Bozzone, Past Commander of the Jedh C. Barker American Legion Memorial Post 153 in Park Ridge. An Air Force veteran of the Korean War, Dick currently serves as the Post Historian and has long served as chairman of the annual Park Ridge Memorial Day Parade.

The American Legion was created shortly after the end of World War I to advocate for the interests of veterans and to protect those of the widows and children of deceased and handicapped veterans. The Pascack Valley Post 153 became among the first posts to be created, beginning operations in March, 1919.

In 1970, Post 153 changed its name to Lance Cpl. Jedh C. Barker Memorial Post 153 in honor of the 22 year old Park Ridge resident who gave his life in Vietnam in 1967 to protect his fellow soldiers. For his selfless act of heroism he was posthumously awarded the Marine Corps Medal of Honor. (http://www.marinemedals.com/barkerjedh.htm)

Over its 94 year history, thousands of veterans, both men and women, have been members of the post. For several decades an energetic and vibrant Auxiliary Unit has been an ardent supporter of the post’s projects, and, since 1986, an increasingly active Sons of the American Legion Squadron has enriched the post as well. In the last 6 years alone the post and its auxiliary units has raised and donated over $100,000 to various veterans, civic, educational and charitable groups.
