Program:
On August 6, 2020 at a virtual meeting via Zoom, Park Ridge Rotary members welcomed Eliot Spiegel, who presented a workshop focused on leadership and getting results. Eliot’s focus is typically on sales, sales management and habits of top producers, but as he pointed out, the insights and lessons apply to many types of organizations, including Rotary.

Eliot has been in sales and sales management for the past 35 years and is a Certified Coach with Southwestern Consulting. He has personally coached professionals in multiple fields to the best years of their careers. He has helped people through the entire array of life’s obstacles, whether it be work, family or health. Today he is an experienced manager, marketer, and leader.

Eliot began his presentation with an illustration of the need for systems, skills and motivation linked to good habits and accountability. He also challenged our club to achieve goals through effective time management, urging us to “find a way, not an excuse” and to take action now.  He referred to procrastination as “creative avoidance.”

According to Eliot, the cycle of a sale applies to Rotary goals, particularly fund raising. It begins with the introduction, followed by the presentation, close, overcoming objections and referrals.  He noted that it takes seven seconds to make an impression. It’s important to know what your client likes and what they don’t like in order to offer a remedy through your organization.

The workshop ended with a discussion on the power of perspective. Eliot noted that famous people have in common a high level of motivation and help from coaches. To learn more, Eliot recommended the following books: Navigate 2.0, Raving Fans: A Revolutionary Approach to Customer Service, and Fierce Conversations.
