Hamilton Rotary and Interact Clubs Joined Bermuda National Trust to Plant 100 Cedar Trees
The Hamilton Rotary Club, along with Interact Club members from BHS, Somersfield, and MSA, over the past 2 years, have planted over 100 cedar trees along with many other tree species. The project was initiated and led by the passion of historian and Rotarian Dr George Cook. It was executed under the expert guidance of Miles Darrell, Head of Natural Heritage at the Bermuda National Trust.
Dr Cook’s enthusiasm for the environment is infectious. Dr Cook shared a quote by British scholar and author Thomas Fuller: “He that plants trees, loves others besides himself.” Thus, “Service above Self” is one of the main tenets of Rotary. Dr Cook, a director of the Hamilton Rotary Club, was recognised for his contributions to the environment, including the planting of endemic trees to coincide with the 101st anniversary of the Rotary Club.
A dream realised. This fulfilment of Dr Cook’s vision leaves an indelible impact on the environment and will stand for years to come. Standing proudly among the young Interactors, Dr Cook offered enthusiastic guidance, and a few laughs with the students as they learned to swing hoes, handle pitchforks, and gently release cedar saplings into their new home. “It’s good to see them getting hands-on experience,” Dr Cook said, watching the students’ enthusiasm and teamwork in action.
Planting sites include the Sherwin Nature Reserve, Eve’s Pond and High Point Nature Reserve, and Somerset Long Bay, along with several other community green spaces where new cedar growth is already visible. The project not only enhances air quality and natural beauty but also strengthens community well-being, mental health, and local pride.
Thanks to the collaboration of the Bermuda National Trust and especially Miles Darrell and other community partners, Bermuda’s environment and Rotary’s spirit of “Service Above Self” continue to thrive. This initiative also reflects Rotary’s “People of Action” ethos and its ongoing mission to protect the environment while inspiring the next generation of leaders.
