Kristen White Director of Raleigh International (Bermuda) along with one of the students Shellvina Caines gave us an overview of the program

The program utilizes overseas expeditions, to challenge young Bermudians to harness their full potential and develop skills for life and is designed to help young people develop skills and self-confidence in a fun and challenging environment beyond the classroom and workplace. We believe that taking a young person 'outside their comfort zone', allows them to explore a different side of themselves and accomplish more than they ever thought possible . The program is a 10 week expedition to other countries where the students learn about life, building team work skills and helping the poor communities they visit.  They build schools, libraries, paint and research flora and tundra.

Shellvina told us how she went on an advanced phase to Malaysia.   She was at first concerned as she knew it would be very physical, they  trekked through jungles, climbed mountains, went skiing and were living in tents; it was freezing!. They also built a kinder garden for small children and an Eco camp for tourists.  She felt it had given her confidence, she could not have imagined standing before a group such as us and making a presentation, and given her life skills altogether a very life changing experience.  She particularly enjoyed having to learn to communicate with others who did not speak any English.  For more information visit www.raleigh.bm
