The young people that this Trust will support will be community leaders in their own time.

They are smart, driven, passionate, and through programs such as  MIRRORs and Raleigh International they will have had the opportunity to see and understand how valuable they are to the community.  The New Beginnings Education Trust was created to provide an opportunity for individuals and organizations to invest in Bermuda’s young people as they pursue education and professional development opportunities

We really are blessed in Bermuda. We have a growing number of personal development programmes, such as MIRRORs, Raleigh International and the Bermuda Sloop Foundation who provide our young people the opportunity to understand through various life experiences how strong, capable and how brilliant they really are; They set goals for themselves, In some cases get themselves back on track if they stepped off, complete their high school education or equivalent and decide to pursue further education and/or professional development training.  We are also blessed with millions of dollars in scholarships, bursaries, education awards and student loan opportunities.  Review News Clippings taken from the paper over a two day period – Friday and Monday; $130,000 + first year ALONE (some are annual payouts for up to 4 years) – scholarship awards from 5 organisations; they cover professional and technical, traditional and non-traditional.  While there is several million dollars in scholarship funding available to young Bermudians, there is a gap in financial aid for young people who perhaps do not have the grade levels, historical community service, etc.  And that Gap is HUGE!!!

Competition for scholarships is FIERCE, especially with the current economic conditions. Majority of existing awards are geared towards students who are A students and who have a long list of community volunteering under their belts.  Few, if any (I’ve yet to find one where anything less than a B was accepted) other than Knowledge Quest (a scholarship of last resort) who help Bermudians of limited financial means earn respected degrees abroad and Ross ‘Blackie’ Talbot Education Awards.

But what about those students who drop out and pick themselves back up?  Or the young people who chose to pursue a GED and not the traditional high school diploma?  Or the young person for whom staying in Bermuda and attending Bermuda College is NOT the right choice. Or the young person who does not have years of volunteering on their student resume? Or the young person, who is currently at the Co-Ed Facility or Westgate, refocuses on bettering him/herself and is ineligible for financial support?  What about the student who can’t even afford to get their GED?!  There are millions of dollars in scholarships, bursaries, education awards and student loans out there and there are hundreds of young people who will not meet the existing criteria because the timing of them focusing on their education DOES NOT FIT THE WAY OUR SOCIETY SAYS THAT IT HAS TO!!

The New Beginnings Education Trust will fill that GAP.

The young people that this Trust will support will be community leaders in their own time.

They are smart, driven, passionate, and through programs such as  MIRRORs and Raleigh International they will have had the opportunity to see and understand how valuable they are to the community.  The New Beginnings Education Trust was created to provide an opportunity for individuals and organizations to invest in Bermuda’s young people as they pursue education and professional development opportunities.   The Trust will provide funding for both educational AND professional training/development opportunities and was formed to ensure that as the candidates begin to see their value and work towards goals that, in some cases, they never thought were realistic for them, that they are not hindered by not being able to afford their next level of training and development.  Our young people do NOT need donations or hand outs!!!!  Let me say that again… Our young people do NOT need donations or hand outs!!!!  The young people of this island need their VILLAGE to invest in them WITHOUT JUDGEMENT… And for the investors there is a return to be had.   By investing in the development of these young people who have chosen to focus on their own personal development you are investing in the long-term stability of your Island community.  The return is far more than an educated individual.    The return is a stable economy, a return to having the most highly educated workforce in Bermuda investing in the next head of the Physical Abuse Centre…   The possibilities are endless and this is no different than investing in a stock and netting a high return.   What higher return can their be than ensuring that your OWN children…. Grand-children and great grand-children are safe and financially stable
