Hospitals are a strange organisation being half way between a business and a community service.  Bermuda needs the hospital to provide services that are not necessarily profitable but are essential to the community an example being the emergency department. However, we cannot just offer high revenue services.  We cannot and do not want to "cherry pick".  The primary driver is community need and no matter how many sound business practices are taken on David stressed that they will always provide the services needed on Island.  As Bermudas only hospitals we wil always do what is in the best interest of the patient

The Hospitals are not-for-profit organisations and although our first goal is to provide high standards of care we are also working for that most vital of business goals - a healthy profit. But this is not for shareholders or Board of Directors.  This means if we make money, the people to benefit are you.  The money is used to improve the facilities, buy new equipment and employ more front line staff. Fully supported by the Government and the insurers the hospitals are moving to a new list of codes and descriptions that more accurately depict what a patient is charged for.  It will also provide us with much better information on services within the hospital.

The Johns Hopkins Medicine International review of healthcare service delivery in Bermuda is nearing completion and will help us validate the service profile of the new hospital.  .Government announced last year that we should focus on the same site for the new hospital.  This is truly an exciting time to be in healthcare in Bermuda.  Our organisations health is vital to the wellbeing of Bermuda and so I am proud to be a part of its development.  I will repeat our success is measured in how well we provide the healthcare services you need.  Healthcare is our passion and we will make sure we can carry out our mandate of caring for this community for many generations to come
