The first contract was signed on September 9, 2022 for the restoration of water, sanitation and kitchen facilities at Mary Waters Secondary School in Grahamstown, South Africa. The construction began Monday, September 12. The work will continue for several months at Mary Waters and six other secondary and primary schools.
The project was organized by the Rotary Club of Grahamstown, South Cape, South Africa, with their international partner, the Rotary Club of Jackson Hole. Seven schools will have their bathrooms, water systems, sanitation systems, and kitchens rehabilitated and secured. Over 50,000 square feet of wall tile will be applied, 111 cabinet doors will be affixed, security doors and locks will be installed where required, and electrical systems, sinks, mirrors, and associated fixtures will be renewed.
Five thousand primary and secondary learners attend class in the schools. Using high quality materials, the life of the improvements will exceed 10 years. More than 50,000 learners, teachers, and staff will benefit from the USD 430,000 project funded by Rotarians in South Africa, USA, Canada, and Brazil. Donations came from over 75 sources.
