Hello Members of Daybreak and welcome to Bulletin 18.
 
World Polio Day Breakfast - This week we held our weekly breakfast meeting on Thursday 24th October due to it being World Polio Day.  We were delighted with the attendance which included members from all the Group 5 Regional Clubs and members from the local branch of Polio Network Victoria (PNV).
 
 
It was also good to have our Assistant District Governor John Clue in attendance. James Mepham from the Rotary Club of Warrnambool Central showed us a short video relating to polio victims in India and a trailer for a documentary he has made on a medical project also operating in India. We also had two Guest Speakers from Polio Network Victoria, Anne Clapham and Jude Drake.  Anne gave us some details about the PNV organization and recent changes to its funding while Jude relayed her experiences with polio which she contracted at age seven.  It was interesting to note that polio survivors are Australia’s largest physical disability group.
 
 
 
Daybreak members swung into action in the kitchen and at the barbecue, providing a delicious breakfast for the attendees.  Thanks must go to Jan Read for organizing the food and her helpers in the kitchen, Mary Bouwman, Jenny Turner and Drew Giblin.  The guys on the barbecue did a fantastic job; Ian Watson, Peter Smid and Andrew Suggett.  Runners between the kitchen and the barbecue were Barry Brooker, Ian Harper and Geoff Grec, and boy did they move!  Thanks to Lydia Sinclair, Janey Preston and Cheryl Bellman for doing the door and raffle and Sue Cassidy for organizing the raffle prizes. Other members were also involved in the set up the night before and the clean up afterwards; apologies if I have left anyone out! It was a big effort by our Club and as a major fundraiser for End Polio Now it is looking like it was a great success.
 
 
The other success was having members of the five Rotary Clubs together enabling networking opportunities between the members.  There were many positive comments on this aspect of the event.
 
Next week our meeting will return to Wednesday at The Lady Bay and we will welcome Alistair McCosh from Deakin University as our Guest Speaker. Then we quickly move into November which is Rotary Foundation Month. 
 
WCC BBQ - This coming Sunday October 27 our Club will be assisting WCC in welcoming International workers to our region. Daybreak will be cooking a barbecue lunch between the 12-1pm at the South Warrnambool Football Club.  See details of the roster below.  We are expecting up to one hundred guests and this could be an opportunity to make new contacts and highlight the work of Rotary to the newcomers of our region. 
 
Christmas Breakup – I hate to say it, but it is now less than nine weeks to Christmas!  How do we celebrate Christmas as a Rotary Club and what type of function do you want? If members have any ideas please bring them to our weekly meeting so we may begin to plan.

Board Meeting – Our next Board meeting will be held on Tuesday Nov 19.  If members have anything they wish to be placed on the agenda for discussion could they please forward a week prior to the meeting date.
 
Backpacks 4 Kids- Jennifer and Peter King from Backpack 4 Kids South West have put out a further call for donations to fill their Christmas sacks.  Donations can be left at Ray White offices in Banyan Street.  At this stage Jennifer and Peter are unsure of the number of sacks they will be filling but have projected the number could be somewhere between 200 and 500! They also may require assistance when it comes time to actually pack the sacks. For further information call 0401 611 123.
 
RYLA – A celebration of RYLA in district 9780 is planned. It is 60 years since the first Rotary Youth Leaders Award Camp was held in the world.  Invitations are extended back to Camp Kangaroobie on Saturday November 30 to help celebrate RYLA’s birthday. I will be having some R & R in Adelaide over the next few days, some might say I’m ‘disconnecting’.  However, I’ll be back ‘to connect’ with you all at our meeting next week at The Bay.
