Hello Daybreakers,
So the week has only been very busy with birthdays and not a lot else thank goodness. I’ve hit a milestone, and caught a bug, so I’m feeling very old this week. Because our are meetings are a little out of whack for the rest of the month I announced most of the April birthdays this week : Sherril the 8th, Cheryl the 12th, Sergio the 14th, I turned 60 on the 16th, Andrew birthday is on the 20th and Dianne’s is on the 26th. Now, that’s a busy month.
The board met last Thursday with members of the new board, as Ian W was an apology, any distributions of funds was deferred until May. Mel has arranged with Steve and Watto to donate $1500.00 to Operation Cleft, and a further $1500.00 to End Trachoma. Mel’s contribution to Daybreak causes was duly noted, and we also congratulate him. We also congratulate him on having his travel independence returned this week.
Our speaker, Milee Collins, whose daughter was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at the age of 6, told us of the lack of support amongst sufferers and their families. Milee moved with her family to Warrnambool due to a lack of medical support in Hawkesdale and started a family support group around 10 years ago. In the Warrnambool, Hamilton and Portland area there are over 70 families now supported by the group. Often Type 1 diabetes is genetic, but all too often is caused by a virus, which gives no warning and is often misdiagnosed, and misunderstood by families who are thrown into 24/7 care of a child with an illness that needs to be constantly monitored, and getting it wrong can be fatal. Most of us have been lucky to never have any experience of this situation. The support group relies on community donations for support, and while not asking directly our club for financial assistance, would greatly appreciate some input.

Next Week : 25th April – ANZAC Day : Cooked Breakfast at the Preston’s $15.00
Following Week: Thursday 3rd May: Cooked @ Mid City combined club meeting $20.00
Bring a spare $5.00 – there will be an enticing raffle ! All for Aus Rotary Health.
Please send apologies through to Steve on 0457 926 657 by Midday on the Tuesday.

Tree Planting
Good afternoon all,
We had a successful morning planting 100 trees and 24 ground cover plants in the previously mulched batter on the southern boundary of the showgrounds.
We worked for about 2 hours digging holes, carting soil, planting trees and shrubs, fertilising and placing tree guards; then had a bbq lunch afterwards with other Committee members.
The prize for the best (Mountain) Goat goes to Peter S holding his shovel in the air with great gusto after he managed to climb the hill to plant a tree. See photo.

We are hoping the showground rabbits like eating grass better than small trees and plastic tree guards.
Many thanks to Mary, Watto, Peter S, Steve, Geoff, Andrew and Ree for a stirling effort.

At his speech to the 2017 International Assembly in January 2017, current RI President Ian Riseley, talking about environmental sustainability, asked every Rotary Club to plant at least one tree for each of its members sometime between the start of his Rotary year (July 2017) and Earth Day which is Sunday 22 April 2018. It was his hope that at least 1.2 million trees would be planted in this period.
Well our club has done its bit. We reached and exceeded this target with one day to spare!
Our tree planting team will meet and discuss what we think is an appropriate reward for our team, owed from other club members for whom we planted trees on their behalf.
Cheers
Glenn
