President's Chat
Steve's Chat 8
Hello all, 24 Members attended this week’s meeting.  Our guest speaker was John Parkinson, John spoke to us about mental health, in particular his association with the LETS TALK program.

It’s been a long time since I have seen so many members engaged by what a guest speaker had to say.  Several members spoke on aspects of their story during question time.

In the time available, john spoke on many aspects of health.  The following are some of Johns thoughts and guidance:

“Physical conditions can sometimes be prevented or reversed by a healthier lifestyle and sometimes it can't.

We talk about the importance of eating healthy, exercising, and losing weight without fear it will offend people.

Why not mental Health/Illness????
There seems to be a fear that talking about prevention somehow implies people with mental illness are at fault for their struggles

Talk openly about periods in your life when you've felt depressed or anxious. Make it clear to anyone listening that you believe mental illness can happen to anyone and it's important to seek help.

Sometimes, people with mental illness struggle to recognize when they need help. Others don't know where to turn or what to do.

Offer to help someone schedule an appointment with their doctor and offer to take them to the appointment. That type of support could be just the help someone needs to reach out to a professional.

Getting Started Month concluded with:

  • Volunteer Expo at TAFE:  Around 5 Daybreak members attended this opportunity to fly the Rotary flag.  Thanks to Cheryl Bellman for coordinating our first inter club community service/awareness program of the Rotary year.  Members from East, Central, Warrnambool and Port Fairy attended throughout the day.

  • July 20th Anniversary Celebration:  Thanks to the untold number of hours put into organizing our celebration by Lydia’s committee, we had a wonderful night of friendship, fellowship and fun on Saturday night.  Due to the late hour of finish, and the official secrets act, I look forward to seeing many pictures, and hearing many more tales in the coming days, weeks and months.

Our meeting on August 8th has been slated as a Forum/Assembly meeting, the intention being to continue & complete our discussions on the members survey.

Next Week’s Meeting

At our meeting on August 1st I look forward to hearing from the Clontarf Academy.  Due to late changes this may not occur, but never fear, I have a video cued up 😊

Breakfast is Cooked, please send apologies to Cheryl Bellman on 0409 003 625 before 12:00 Noon on Tuesday.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

A U.S. Marine Colonel was about to start the morning briefing to his staff.

While waiting for the coffee machine to finish brewing, the Colonel decided to pose a question to all assembled.

He explained that his wife had been a bit frisky the night before and he failed to get his usual amount of sound sleep.

He posed the question of just how much of sex was considered “work” and how much of it was “fun?”

A Major chimed in with 75%-25% in favor of work.

A Captain said it was 50%-50%.

A Lieutenant responded with 25%-75% in favor of fun, depending upon his state of inebriation at the time.

There being no consensus, the Colonel turned to the Private First Class who was in charge of making the coffee and asked for his opinion.

Without any hesitation, the young Private First Class responded, “Sir, it has to be 100% fun.”

The colonel was surprised and as you might guess, asked “Why?”

“Well, sir, if there was any work involved, the officers would have me doing it for them.”

A young college girl came running in tears to her father. "Dad, you gave me some terrible financial advice!" she cried.

"I did? What did I tell you?" said the dad.

"You told me to put my money in that big bank, and now that big bank is in trouble."

"What are you talking about? That's one of the largest banks in the world," he said. "Surely there must be some mistake."

"I don't think so," she sniffed. "They just returned one of my checks with a note saying, 'Insufficient Funds'."

Value of A Good Vocabulary
I called an old school classmate and asked what he was doing.

He replied that he was working on "Aqua-thermal treatment of ceramics, aluminium and steel under a constrained environment."

I was impressed...

On inquiring further, I learned that he was washing dishes with hot water under his wife's supervision.
