President's Chat
Pres Chat 26/10
On Wednesday October 19th The Rotary Club of Warrnambool Daybreak met for our usual breakfast meeting.

In the absence of President Sergio, Vice President chaired the meeting, and we welcomed District 9780 District Govenor Kathy Rivett to our breakfast meeting who addressed us.

Our meeting on Wednesday October 26th was chaired by Ian Harper, as President Sergio was still away, as was VP Chris.

After opening the meeting and having breakfast and fellowship, Jennie Miller ran the meeting through proposed changes to the membership process that Jennie and Steve had been working on.

Some key points:

  • It’s proposed that a meeting with the prospective member while the form is being filled out rather than afterwards, so that the expectations are explained before they complete the form, together with new member information sheet and also the privacy form.
  • Approval process to stay the same.
  • Then the induction day is to occur.
  • A welcome folder, add the strategic plan to that as well as the club leadership plan and member contact details.
  • Once induction is complete it is over to the mentor of the newly inducted member.
Suggestions for newly inducted members:
  • Read about Rotary Foundation.
  • Introduce yourself to 2 Rotary members each week.
  • Meet with a mentor
  • Attend new members information sessions
  • Attend a board meeting
  • Attend a district meeting
  • Participate in a service project
  • Present at a club meeting, perhaps about 3 or 4 months into their membership.
  • Take an online course
After that it was on to an activity that Di had prepared where we all tried our hand at arts.

Sandra then conducted the quiz with Bob starring getting 5 questions.

Ian then closed the meeting for the week.

Tolerance of Differences

Tolerance is one of the most important virtues in the Rotary spirit. As early as 1911 our founder Paul Harris in his essay “Rational Rotarianism” said, “If by interposition of Providence I someday were to find myself standing on a platform in some great Coliseum looking into the eyes of every living Rotarian, and were to be told that I could have one word to say, without an instant’s hesitation and at the top of my voice, I would shout ‘Toleration!’”

Our founder Paul Harris has repeatedly iterated: “Rotarians respect each other‘s opinions and are tolerant and friendly at all times. Catholics, Protestants, Moslems, Jews, and Buddhists break bread together in Rotary.” And it is this tolerant attitude that prompted the Rotary International to adopt the following statement in 1933: “Rotarians in all countries should recognize these facts (differences), and there should be a thoughtful avoidance of criticism of the laws and customs of one country by the Rotarians of another country.” Tolerance is a key to understanding among different peoples and nations.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

Came to that awkward moment when the priest asked if anyone had anything to say
concerning the union of the bride and groom.

Utter silence was broken when a beautiful young woman carrying a child stood up.
She starts walking slowly towards the priest.

The congregation was aghast - you could almost hear a pin drop.

The groom's jaw dropped as he stared in disbelief at the approaching young woman and child.

Chaos ensued as the bride threw the bouquet into the air and burst out crying.

Then the groom's mother fainted.

The best men started giving each other looks and wondering how to save the situation.

The priest asked the woman, "Can you tell us why you came forward? What do you have to say?"

There was absolute silence in the church as the woman replied, "We can't hear you in the back."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

More groaners...

Dad, are we pyromaniacs?  Yes, we arson.

She was only a moonshiner's daughter, but I miss her still.

What do you call a pig with laryngitis? Disgruntled.

Scientists got together to study the effects of alcohol on a person’s walk,
and the result was staggering.

Just so everyone is clear, I’m going to put my glasses on.

A commander walks into a bar and orders everyone around.

I lost my job as a stage designer. I left without making a scene.

How much did the pirate pay to get his ears pierced? A buccaneer.

Why is it unwise to share your secrets with a clock? Well, time will tell.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There I was sitting at the bar staring at my drink when a large, trouble-making biker steps up
next to me, grabs my drink, and gulps it down in one swig.

"Well, whatcha' gonna do about it?", he says, menacingly, as I burst into tears.
"This is the worst day of my life," I say. "I'm a complete failure. I was late to a meeting and my boss fired me.
When I went to the parking lot, I found my car had been stolen and I don't have any insurance.
I left my wallet in the cab I took home. I found my wife with another man and then my dog bit me."

"So I came to this bar to work up the courage to put an end to it all, I buy a drink,
I drop a capsule in, and sit here watching the poison dissolve; then you show up
and drink the whole thing! But enough about me, how's your day going?”
