President's Chat
Liza's Chat 9
Hello members of Daybreak and welcome to Bulletin 9.

Guest Speaker - We had a very full program at our meeting this week.  Our guest speaker was Daybreak member Ann Barker who gave us a very informative talk on her recent trip to Nepal which centred largely on the Seven Women Project.  Seven Women was started by Stephanie Woollard after meeting seven disabled women working in a tin shed in Kathmandu. The project empowers marginalised women through education and employment.  Participants are trained to produce products for sale, both locally and abroad.

Ann was joined on her trip to Nepal by members of other Rotary Clubs.  They observed some of the training venues where women learn to cook and make crafts.  They were also privileged to meet Dr Sanduk Ruit who pioneered a new form cataract surgery and to see the advanced surgical technique being carried out at the Tilganga Institute of Opthalmology.  Ann took some amazing photographs of her trip and by all accounts she had quite an inspirational journey.

Fun Session – The fun session was both educational and fun and was led by Glenn Rundell.  Glenn gave us a history lesson on the origins of the Rotary Wheel design from its inception to present day.  There was much discussion on what the future Rotary Wheel could like with Glenn providing inspiration to probably 50% of the Daybreak members!

Fellowship – At this week’s meeting members were treated to some serious and not so serious photos of a fellowship trip members took to The National Gallery of Victoria to see The Terracotta Warriors exhibition.  This was an engaging day full of culture, dining and wining, shopping and much humour! We would like to increase our fellowship activities and welcome suggestions for future events from members.

Next Week’s meeting – Daybreak members will join the Rotary Club of Warrnambool for their Father’s Day Breakfast to celebrate Dads that have been nominated for Father of the Year Awards.  This community event will be held at the City Memorial Bowls Club on Wednesday August 28 commencing at 7.00am.  The cost is $20 to be paid on arrival.  If you plan on attending please let Mary know Mobile: 0439 711 057 or Email: marybouwman@bigpond.com

DAYBREAK NEWS

Parkinson’s Walk - The Parkinson’s Walk was held on Sunday August 18 and a big thank you must go to the members that staffed the BBQ – Ian H, Jan, Janey and Chris.  Also thanks to Andrew Suggett for all his work behind the scenes of this community event.

Documented project for DG – Thank you to Glenn for documenting the Care Project for inclusion into the e-book the District Governor is preparing as a gift to Rotary International President Mark Maloney on his upcoming visit to Ballarat.  The documentation for Daybreak has now been submitted.

Wannon Water “Ripple Effect” Grants – In the past week Glenn has submitted an application requesting $2000 to fund the Care Program through to next year.  Thank you Glenn these applications take a considerable amount of time and your time is very much appreciated.

Dam Project in India – in the past week I circulated to all members’ information regarding a water project in India scheduled for 2020.  Daybreak has a member that is interested in participating in this project which has received global funding.  The email outlines full particulars of the trip with various tours that you could include if you so wish.  Our member Geoff would be keen to be accompanied by another Daybreaker.  Please contact Geoff if you are interested.

Wannon Awards – Wannon Sport and Volunteer Awards are calling for nominations which close September 26th.  At the Board level we would welcome suggestions from our members.  Nominations can be Daybreak members or people from the wider community.  Community contribution categories are applicable to an individual or a group.

Rotary Club of Ararat – The Rotary Club of Ararat are celebrating their 90th Year anniversary on Saturday August 31 at the Chalambar Golf Club, 6.30 for 7pm start.  Cost is $40 which includes a two course dinner and show (comedy hypnotist Gerard V). Rotary Club of Warrnambool – The Rotary Club of Warrnambool are also celebrating their 90th year anniversary on November 23 at the City Memorial Bowls Club. Cost is $40 for a three course meal with drinks at bar prices.  Register your attendance by November 8 to Terry O’neill oneill.terry29@gmail.com or Brian Trenery 0417 301 796

Board Meeting and Committees – Daybreak’s second Board meeting is scheduled for Monday August 26 and I will be giving a report to members at our weekly meeting on September 4.  It has been a relatively slow start to the year in terms of Committee meetings and setting objectives for the busy summer period ahead.  I am requesting that Directors and Committee members meet in the near future to set objectives.  In the coming weeks (date to be advised) I will schedule a reporting session for Directors within our weekly meeting.  This will give all Club members the opportunity to see what other groups are working on and to also contribute any ideas that they may have.

Birthday Celebrations – Daybreak members Peter Cassady and Geoff Grec will both celebrate birthdays in the coming week on Tuesday August 27th.  Happy birthday guys!

I hope you all have a successful week in whatever you do and whatever you call success! Remember in this often divided world in which we live, Rotary really does have the capacity to connect us all.

Liza

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

Dave wakes up at home with a huge hangover. He forces himself to open his eyes, and the first thing he sees is a couple of aspirins and a glass of water on the side table.
He sits down and sees his clothing in front of him, all clean and pressed. Dave looks around the room and sees that it is in a perfect order, spotless, clean. So is the rest of the house. He takes the aspirins and notices a note on the table, "Honey, breakfast is on the stove, I left early to go shopping. Love you."

So he goes to the kitchen and sure enough there is a hot breakfast and the morning newspaper. His son is also at the table, eating.
Dave asks, "Son, what happened last night?"

His son says, "Well, you came home after 3 A.M., drunk and delirious.
Broke some furniture, threw up in the hallway, and gave yourself a black eye when you stumbled into the door."

Confused, Dave asks, "So, why is everything in order and so clean, and breakfast is on the table waiting for me?"

His son replies, "Oh that! Mom dragged you to the bedroom, and when she tried to take your pants off you said, "Lady leave me alone, I'm married!"

A little girl became restless as the preacher's sermon dragged on and on.
Finally, she leaned over to her mother and whispered, "Mommy, if we give  him the money now, will he let us go?"

Mary Poppins was traveling home, but due to worsening weather, she decided to stop at a hotel for the night. She approached the receptionist and asked for a room for the night.

"Certainly madam", he replied courteously.

"Is the resturant open still?" inquired Mary.

"Sorry, no," came the reply, "but room service is available all night. Would you care to select something from this menu?"

Mary smiled and took the menu and perused it. "Hmm, I would like cauliflower cheese please," said Mary.

"Certainly madam," he replied.

"And may I have breakfast in bed?" asked Mary politely. The receptionist nodded and smiled. "In that case, I would love a couple of poached eggs please," Mary mused.

After confirming the order, Mary signed in and went up to her room for the night. The night passed uneventfully and next morning Mary came down early to check out. The same guy was still on the desk.

"Morning madam...sleep well?"

"Yes, thank you," Mary replied.

"Food to your liking?"

"Well, I have to say the cauliflower cheese was exceptional, I don't think I have had better. Shame about the eggs ....they really weren't that nice at all," replied Mary truthfully.

"Oh...well, perhaps you could contribute these thoughts to our Guest Comments Book. We are always looking to improve our service and would value your opinion," said the receptionist.

"Ok I will...thanks!" replied Mary....who then checked out, paused awhile, then scribbled a comment into the book. Waving, she left to continue her journey.

Curious, the receptionist picked up the book to see the comment Mary had written. Here it is.........
