President's Chat
Steve's Chat 42
Hello Daybreakers,

This week’s meeting was well attended by members and guests.  Philip Ritchie brought French exchange student Lea Constatin along to have a chat and update those present on  the exchange students movie fundraiser.

Our guest speaker was Robert Coffey, who brought along Greg Allison, to talk about the Warrnambool Eisteddfod Society.

The Eisteddfod Society organises and stages an annual series of competitions in seven areas of the performing arts under the banner of the City of Warrnambool Eisteddfod. The objectives of these competitions are:
  • to give competitors stage experience in the areas of speech & drama; vocal and instrumental music; classical and contemporary dance; debating; calisthenics; Highland dance and pipe organ
  • to give competitors the opportunity to receive professional adjudication and feed back.
The Eisteddfod runs from May till September each year and offers 34 days of competition. During that time thousands of competitors take part
The Eisteddfod is a festival of performance, and of community. The organising committee is comprised of a group of volunteers who work from February to November to put together an eisteddfod which is intended to be a rewarding and enjoyable experience for all involved.

Volunteers are also invited to help with daily administration during each competition.   The society are supported by sponsors which include the major local philanthropic trusts, the Rotary Clubs of Warrnambool, Creative Victoria, the City of Warrnambool, local schools, businesses and organisations and the families of past and present competitors and Committee members.

During the meeting we re-inducted past founding member, Barry Moran.  It was up to Barry Brooker to introduce our newest member to the club.  However, B2 did a great job of giving a brief history of his work both past and present.  Welcome back Barry.

On Wednesday night Cheryl organised a fellowship meeting with Geoff Grec and family members. I am sure the evening went well.

Also on Wednesday night Liza and I attended a Rotary House committee meeting.  More will be spoken on the outcome of that meeting in the coming days and weeks.

On Saturday Bob organised a grape picking fundraiser at Newtons Ridge Winery.  Judging by the Facebook posts from Ann and Peter it was a glorious day for grape picking and enjoying the wine tasting.  Thanks to Dianne, Peter, Jan and Ann who assisted Bob, Katy & Padma with the project.

- From Bob
On a warm sunny day, 5 Daybreakers and 2 conscripts (all quality, not quantity) took off for Newtons Ridge vineyard. We were warmly welcomed, pointed in the right direction, and duly applied ourselves to picking the best grapes we have encountered.

Hot cross buns for morning tea were nice, providing the energy for the second session up to lunch.

A lovely lunch (bbq and nicely filled rolls) was complimented by generous tastings of their wine range, and we all left with a bottle under our arm.

Oh, and they insisted on paying us, not a cheque in the mail, but a cheque for $500 in my pocket. A big thankyou to the team for a job well done.

On Sunday Ian Harper, Bob and Alison attended the Daybreak Care project at Surfside 2.
Ian Harper advises we had a total of 7 clients.  This is an equal record of people attending.

There were 15 loads of washing done and 13 dryer loads.  The showers were used, and some toiletries and clothes were provided to some clients.  Thanks Ian, Alison and Bob for giving up their Sunday afternoon to assist.

While the seven above members were hard at work with service projects, 6 members travelled to Maryborough to attend the District 9780 Conference.  We had lots of fun, especially Janey Preston  who took out the best theme dressed female, and got to hear from a number of inspirational keynote speakers.

Many of the Keynote Speakers were outstanding, but the standouts for me were the CEO of Purple House Sara Brown, and Rotary International Presidents representative Stephen Hill.

LAUGHTER, THE BEST MEDICINE

France’s minister for European affairs, Nathalie Loiseau, has named her cat ‘Brexit’ because when she opens the door he ‘stays put’.
“He wakes me up every morning meowing to death because he wants to go out, and then when I open the door he stays put, undecided, and then glares at me when I put him out,” Loiseau told Le Journal du Dimanche.
It’s the perfect, and hilarious, metaphor for Brexit.

A prominent orchestra was performing Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. At one point in the final movement of the symphony, there is a long stretch--over 20 minutes--where the bass violins don't play a note. So, rather than just sit there, the section leader suggested that they sneak out of the orchestra and go across the street to the tavern. The other bass players agreed that this was a splendid idea, and a few minutes later, the basses were in the bar, knocking back drinks at a prodigious rate.
This went on for some time, with all the bass players becoming rather inebriated. One of them happened to look down at his watch and exclaimed, "We'd better get back to our seats or we're going to miss our cue!"

"Relax," said the section leader, "I've got it all taken care of. You see, before the performance started tonight I anticipated this problem, so I took a piece of string and I tied the conductor's score sheet. He won't be able to turn the pages when he gets to that part. He'll have to stop the orchestra for a few minutes so he can get it untied. We'll have plenty of time!"

The other bass players praised his inventiveness with one final round of drinks. Then they made their way back across the street to the concert hall, and staggered drunkenly to their seats.

Sure enough, about this time the conductor started to have trouble with his score. He tried to fidget with it, hoping he could solve the problem without having to stop the performance. Unfortunately, he couldn't get the pages to turn, and at last he had to stop the orchestra and spend a few minutes untying the string that held the last section of the score bound. The conductor was clearly annoyed and not a little frazzled.

This, of course, did not go unnoticed by the audience. One woman in the crowd remarked to her husband, "That conductor looks upset and rather nervous."

"Of course he's nervous," the husband replied. "It's the bottom of the Ninth, the score is tied, and the basses are loaded."

... Police were called to the daycare centre, where a three-year-old was resisting a rest.

. Did you hear about the fellow whose whole left side was cut off?  He's all right now.

St. Peter and Satan were having an argument one day about baseball. Satan proposed a game to be played on neutral grounds between a select team from the heavenly host and his own hand-picked boys.

"Very well," said the gatekeeper of Heaven. "But you realize, I hope, that we've got all the good players and the best coaches."

"I know, and that's all right," Satan answered unperturbed. "We've got all the umpires."

Three explorers became lost in the jungle and wandered for days with no food and little water...

One day, just as they were finally about to give up, they crawled into a clearing and there right in front of them stood a Cannibal's Restaurant.

Out front near the entrance was a large menu board. With the little energy they had left, they dragged themselves across the clearing and looked up to see the following menu:

"Par boiled Priest $12.00
Roast Lion Hunter $14.00
Steamed Politician $198.50"

They struggled into the establishment, dragged themselves to a table, and a waiter came to take their order. Before they ordered, one of the explorers asked the waiter, "Can you help me understand your menu? The first two items are priced about the same, but the third item, the politician, is priced so much higher. Why is that?"

"Are you kidding?" replied the waiter. "Did you ever try to CLEAN one of those suckers?"
