President's Chat
Liza's Chat 32
Hello members of Daybreak and welcome to Bulletin 32

Weekly Meeting – Our speaker this week was Daybreak member Geoff Grec who took us to the Panama Canal through a slide show highlighting aspects of his recent twenty-one day cruise.

It was most interesting seeing the docks that ships must pass through to navigate the journey to the other side.  The fee to pass through is based on per capita, meaning it cost approximately $1million dollars for Geoff’s ship to pass through the canal; a very tidy money spinner for the country of Panama! Geoff wetted our appetite for travel to this destination and if one can stand the heat and humidity of the part of the world, it would be a very interesting cruise in which to participate.
Our speaker next, organised by Glenn, will be Paula Gardiner the Manager for the Reid Oval redevelopment project.

Future Guest Speakers and Fun Sessions – Listed below are the guest presenter and fun session roster for the weeks of February and into March. The rostered members are to either give a presentation or to organize another guest speaker.  Remember that it can be just as interesting to hear the life story of one of our members, so don’t be too shy to speak about yourselves as it gives our newer members an  insight into who you are and your life journey.  Please advise me in advance if you have organized another speaker for your rostered session.

February 26 – Guest Presenter Helen Bain (Peter Smid), Fun Session Andrew Nield
March 4 – Guest Presenter Lydia Sinclair, Fun Session Andrew Giblin
March 11 – Andrew Suggett, Fun Session Mehul Patel
March 18 – Max Taylor, Fun Session Chris Preston
March 25 – Jenny Turner, Fun Session Janey Preston

Social Night – Eleven members met for an enjoyable dinner last Friday evening at Proudfoots on the River.  With our own private upstairs dining room we were able to have plenty of laughs without disturbing other patrons, and the food was delicious.

It is hoped to have more social functions throughout 2020 with the possibility of finally getting a wine tour scheduled at some time after the fishing trip to Portland which is planned for the weekend of February 29.

Clean up Australia Day – Due to other commitments Daybreak are unable to join other community members at the usual Clean Up Australia Day on March 1. Alternatively Glenn has organised with the Council that Daybreak members do their clean up two weeks later on Sunday March 15. More details regarding where to meet before (and possibly after) will follow at our weekly meeting.

The Care Program –  The care program had six clients attend last week. Donations of deodorant (both male and female) are welcome, and of course donated clothes are always accepted.
Daybreaks’ Care Program has been one of the projects selected by the District Conference Committee to be featured in a video clip to be played at this years’ conference in Swan Hill. Janey and Chris have kindly volunteered to be interviewed about the project at the conference.

Board Meeting – Our February Board meeting is scheduled for Tuesday Feb 18 and will be held at Chris and Janeys’ house, commencing at 7pm.  Could Directors please circulate your reports to other Board members in adequate time to be read and considered prior to commencement of the meeting?  If members have anything they wish to bring before the Board please email me and I will include on the Agenda.

The Long Lunch – For catering purposes, Jenny needs to confirm numbers this coming weekend. We do have a few spare tickets this year, so if you know of anyone that may wish to attend the event please contact them as soon as possible.

Foundation Movie Night – Sue is in the process of locking in dates for our next Foundation Movie Night which looks like being scheduled around the date of May 21 (tbc).  I am Woman which focuses on the story of Helen Reddy and the impact of her iconic song, especially on the feminist movement, is our selected movie.

We are all so busy these days in what seems like an ever increasingly techno world full of phones, emails and hashtags and it is now, I  think, more important to remember the value and benefits of human connection and how this may impact others in the community work we are involved with.

Enjoy your week

Liza

In January, while crossing a border on his bicycle, a man was stopped by Paul, a security guard, who pointed to two sacks the man had on his shoulders.
"What's in the bags?" asked the guard.
"Sand," replied the cyclist.
"Get them off - we'll take a look," said the guard.

The cyclist did as he was told, emptied the bags, and proving they contained nothing but sand, reloaded the bags, put them on his shoulders and continued across the border.

Two weeks later, the same thing happened. Again Paul the security guard demanded to see the two bags, which again contained nothing but sand.
This went on every week for months, until one day the cyclist with the sand bags failed to appear.

A few days later, the guard happened to meet the cyclist downtown. "Say friend, you sure had us crazy", said the guard. "We knew you were smuggling something across the border. I won't say a word - but what is it?"

"Bicycles."

The wedding ceremony came to the point where the Minister asked if anyone had anything to say concerning the union of the bride and groom. It was their time to stand up and talk, or forever hold their peace.

The moment of utter silence was broken by a young beautiful woman carrying a child.
She stood up and started walking slowly towards the pastor.
The congregation was aghast as the penny dropped.
The Groom’s jaw dropped as he stared disbelievingly at the approaching young woman and child.

Chaos ensued. The bride threw the bouquet in the air and burst out crying. Then the groom's mother fainted.
The Best men started giving each other looks and wondering how best to help save the situation.

The Minister asked the woman, "Can you tell us, why you came forward?
What do you have to say?”
There was absolute silence in the church.

The woman replied, "We can't hear you at the back of the church”.

I realized that my five-year-old grandson had been watching too many reality TV shows the day we attended a relative's wedding. As the four bridesmaids walked down the aisle toward the front of the church, he turned to me and asked, "Is this where the groom decides which one he wants to marry?"

----------------------------------------

An 85 year old couple were married almost 60 years before they both died. They had been in good health the last ten years mainly due to her interest in health food, and exercise.

When they reached the pearly gates, St Peter took them to their mansion which was decked out with a beautiful kitchen and master bath suite and spa. As they looked in awe, the old man asked Peter how much all this was going to cost.
“It’s free,” Peter replied. “This is Heaven.”

Next they went out back to survey the championship golf course that the home backed on to. They would have golfing privileges everyday and each week the course changed to a new one representing the greatest golf courses on Earth.
The old man asked: “What are the green fees?”

Peter’s reply: “This is Heaven, you play for free.”
Next they went to the club house and saw the lavish buffet lunch with the cuisine’s of the world laid out.
“How much to eat?” asked the old man.

“Don’t you understand yet? This is Heaven, it is free!” Peter replied with some exasperation.
“Well, where are the low fat and low cholesterol tables?” the old man asked timidly.

Peter lectured: “That’s the best part, you can eat as much as you like of whatever you like and you never get fat and you never get sick. This is Heaven.”

With that, the old man went into a fit of anger, throwing down his hat and stomping on it, and shrieking wildly. Peter and his wife both tried to calm him down, asking him what was wrong.

The old man looked at his wife and said: “This is all your fault. If it weren’t for your blasted bran muffins, I could have been here ten years ago!”
