Hello Daybreakers,
At this week’s meeting our guest speakers were Natalia Mendes & Ayesha Albarwani. Natalia & Ayesha are employed by mpower, however, they gave us a refreshing and informative presentation on Culture & Community in their place of birth. Despite issues with their PowerPoint presentation they managed to keep us enthralled and at times amused with their Q&A session.
Next week we will be hearing from Sergio on his recent European travels.
Rotary District 9780 Rotaract Chair Cheryl Bellman has been busy this week. Cheryl and IP Warrnambool Rotaract President George McLeod attended Southwest Healthcare to make e a significant donation. From past Rotaract fundraising activities George and Cheryl presented a cheque for $2000:00, this will go towards the purchase of a second image intensifier (x-ray) machine for the operating theaters.
Planning is underway for the Club Christmas party being held at Glenn and Ree Rundells on Saturday August 8th. For catering purposes RSVP to Alison before this week’s meeting. (see attached flyer). Please remember that this is a Saturday event because of our ongoing commitments to the Homeless Program and Hillside Markets.
A reminder that the last club meeting for the calendar year will be our Christmas meeting held at Andrew & Betty Sugget’s on Wednesday December 19th. Jan will organise the coffee van to arrive as per last year.
Hillside Markets. This Sunday marks the 1st of three markets. Please remember to check your diaries for your rostered events and times. If you have any books, please let either Ian Harper or myself know so we can arrange to have them picked up.
Homeless Program. The club’s commitment to this program continues, we are awaiting updates from other organisations in the community before we can give updates on venues during the “Festive” season. In the meantime, it is important that you check your diaries, for OH& plus insurance we must have the rostered members present.
Upcoming Board meeting. The Board is due to meet on Thursday December 13th, if you have something you wish discussed please send me an email or catch up at the next two club meetings.
On the eve of the International Day for the Abolition of Slavery (Dec 2), the Australian Federal Government has passed into law the first Federal Modern Slavery Act
While the legislation is not perfect - I believe there needs to be an Independent Anti-Slavery Commissioner and penalties for companies that do not comply, this is an important first step and there will be a review of the scheme in three years.
Grace Forrest, Co-Founder of the Walk Free Foundation, has been appointed UNAA Goodwill Ambassador for Anti-Slavery.
Grace was a keynote speaker at the recent One Young World Summit 2018 in The Hague, Netherlands. The Young Leaders Against Sexual Violence (YLASV) are a group of young people who demonstrate a strong personal or professional commitment and significant expertise in addressing sexual and gender-based violence in their communities and around the world.
This following is a clip/YouTube video of her presentation. (the clip only runs for 2.53 minutes
